Living Well With Difficult Emotions
Tools to Change Depression Through WiseMind
Wise Mind
• Wise Mind: Wise mind is that part of each person that can know
and experience truth. It is where the person knows something to be
true or valid. It is almost always quiet, It has a certain peace. It is
where the person knows something in a centered way.
• Reasonable Mind: A person is in Reasonable Mind… when they are
approaching things intellectually, thinking logically, planning
behavior, paying attention to empirical facts (facts that can be
observed or measured or counted), focusing their attention, and
when they are "cool," that is, not emotional in their approaches to
solving problems.
• Emotional Mind: A person is in Emotion Mind when their thinking
and behavior are controlled mostly by their emotions. Logical
thinking and planning are difficult, facts may be distorted or made
larger or more important, thoughts and behaviors might be said to
be "hot," and the energy of the behavior tends to match the
intensity of the feelings. 1. How do you know when it’s
your wise mind offering
intuition?
2. How can you listen more to
your wise mind?

Let’s Learn Thoughts Skills
Thoughts change our feelings and our
behaviors. Changing thoughts can
change our behaviors. These skills help
us not be at the mercy of our thoughts.
Thought
Skills
Thought
Stopping
Thought stopping requires five steps…
Notice a
negative
thought
pattern
Begin to
question the
thought
pattern
Tell the
thought to
stop (may take
ten times)
Refocus your
attention on
another task
REPEAT – 10
to 30 Times
Thought Stopping: Do not believe everything
you think! Thoughts are habitual. Many of them
are patterns and habits that have well worn out
their usefulness.
Thought
Skills
RETHINKING
• Rethinking: Rethinking is challenging thought patterns with
reality. Since not all thoughts are true and many are not helpful.
Start looking for ways to prove the thoughts wrong. Once you
do this replace the negative lie with a more true helpful
thought.
• Rethinking Requires these Steps
1. Noticing an Unhelpful Thinking Pattern or Thought
2. Asking yourself: “Is it Accurate/True, Helpful, and
Compassionate?”
3. Bring Up Exceptions: ”I know the thought is that I am not
lovable but… I have been supported by many group members
who seem to care about me.”
4. Make a More Real Thought: Use the new information to
make a more true more real, more helpful or more
compassionate thought. “Even though not every one likes me
and I wish I had a partner there are people who care about
me”
Thought Skills
Coaching Thoughts
We can use our thoughts to help
us move forward, tolerate
challenges and lead a life of
meaning and purpose.
We can retrain our brain and
thoughts to use ways of
speaking to ourselves that is
supportive, true, compassionate
and helpful.
Thoughts can push us to have
urges that do not help our lives.
If we have a negative thought
but delay the action the thought
looses power and we gain
power.
Coaching Thoughts Have These
Parts
•They support us and validate the valid
•They help put a difficulty in perspective
•They are true but helpful
Thought Skills
Connect to Values
“Find your why”
• Remember what you really value in life. Our values can help
us remember why we want to build our life rather than
acting in ways that do not support our vitality.
• We are always balancing: Short-Term and Long-Term Good.
Our values can help us find balance.
• Find Your Why
• Identify something that is worth fighting for
• Remind yourself that difficulty happens it’s our response to
difficulty that matters.
• Connect how helping your self keep moving forward in what
ever way you can at this moment can be like a positive
snowball or an upward spiral.
Let’s Learn Thoughts Skills
Thoughts change our feelings and our
behaviors. Changing thoughts can
change our behaviors. These skills help
us not be at the mercy of our thoughts.
Take Action
Move the Body
Exercise and Depression
• Reduce Symptoms: A study published in 2005 found
that walking briskly 35 minutes a day five times a week
or 60 minutes a day three times a week reduced mild
to moderate depression symptoms.
• Endorphins: For many years, experts have known that
exercise enhances the action of endorphins, chemicals
that circulate throughout the body.
• Improved Immunity: Endorphins improve natural
immunity and reduce the perception of pain.
• Increased BDNF: Changes a neurochemical called
BDNF that helps the brain grow and regrow.
• Increased Serotonin: Changes Serotonin a
neurochemical that is in antidepressant medication.
• Increased Stamina: Increases our stamina and gets us
doing things.

Turning Stress to Power w/ The 3 C’s
C
C
C
Self-Compassion: Understanding and kindness towards
yourself. Willingness to challenge your self and to accept your
needs. Tenderness with your vulnerability and setting limits
Self-Care: Taking actions to care for your needs. Eating,
resting, exercise, meaning and spirituality, setting limits,
recovery time and active relaxation practices.
Connection: Stress makes us want to isolate and often makes
us feel alone. Reaching out for support is a skill that gives us
the chance to heal.

  • 14. Let’s Learn Thoughts Skills Thoughts change our feelings and our behaviors. Changing thoughts can change our behaviors. These skills help us not be at the mercy of our thoughts.
  • 15. Thought Skills Thought Stopping Thought stopping requires five steps… Notice a negative thought pattern Begin to question the thought pattern Tell the thought to stop (may take ten times) Refocus your attention on another task REPEAT – 10 to 30 Times Thought Stopping: Do not believe everything you think! Thoughts are habitual. Many of them are patterns and habits that have well worn out their usefulness.
  • 16. Thought Skills RETHINKING • Rethinking: Rethinking is challenging thought patterns with reality. Since not all thoughts are true and many are not helpful. Start looking for ways to prove the thoughts wrong. Once you do this replace the negative lie with a more true helpful thought. • Rethinking Requires these Steps 1. Noticing an Unhelpful Thinking Pattern or Thought 2. Asking yourself: “Is it Accurate/True, Helpful, and Compassionate?” 3. Bring Up Exceptions: ”I know the thought is that I am not lovable but… I have been supported by many group members who seem to care about me.” 4. Make a More Real Thought: Use the new information to make a more true more real, more helpful or more compassionate thought. “Even though not every one likes me and I wish I had a partner there are people who care about me”
  • 17. Thought Skills Coaching Thoughts We can use our thoughts to help us move forward, tolerate challenges and lead a life of meaning and purpose. We can retrain our brain and thoughts to use ways of speaking to ourselves that is supportive, true, compassionate and helpful. Thoughts can push us to have urges that do not help our lives. If we have a negative thought but delay the action the thought looses power and we gain power. Coaching Thoughts Have These Parts •They support us and validate the valid •They help put a difficulty in perspective •They are true but helpful
  • 18. Thought Skills Connect to Values “Find your why” • Remember what you really value in life. Our values can help us remember why we want to build our life rather than acting in ways that do not support our vitality. • We are always balancing: Short-Term and Long-Term Good. Our values can help us find balance. • Find Your Why • Identify something that is worth fighting for • Remind yourself that difficulty happens it’s our response to difficulty that matters. • Connect how helping your self keep moving forward in what ever way you can at this moment can be like a positive snowball or an upward spiral.
