3. Gayatri or Gayatri Devi is the universal divine mother. She is regarded the mother of the
sacred vedas and remains the divine energy that animates all things. Gayatri is actually the
name of a vedic hymn, well known as Gayatri Mantra, which is regarded the most sacred.
Goddess Gayatri Devi is the personification of this very potent, sacred mantra.
There is a mythical story regarding the origin of Gayatri Devi. Once, lord Brahma, the God
of creation wanted to do an important sacrifice. However for performing the sacrifice, he had
to have a consort. Brahma requested the priest to get him a girl immediately, so that he can
marry her there itself and proceed with the ritual as planned. There was a beautiful maiden,
whose abode used to be the Himalayan regions of Mount Kailash and lake Manasarovar.
Incidentally she was found to be at that place then. Brahma was pleased, married her and
made her his consort, and went ahead with the sacrifice. This remarkable young woman
was none other than the divine manifestation of the sacred vedic hymn, Gayatri Mantra, and
hence she became, Gayatri Devi.
Gayatri Mantra is an earnest prayer of immense faith and devotion, addressed to the
supreme universal spirit. This mantra invokes the divinity and seeks its presence to
enlighten the self and illuminate the intellect. The hymn is made up of 24 syllables of
profound meaning and has a specific rhythm that is regarded extremely potent. Gayatri
Mantra is a great purifying factor on earth, which can bestow on sincere devotees,
substantial material and spiritual benefits. It is no surprise that Gayatri Devi, the
personification of this unique mantra, is regarded as the divine mother of the vedas and also
of the universe.
Goddess Gayatri is seated on a blooming red lotus. She is normally seen with five heads
and ten eyes, which cast their glances in all directions. In her ten arms, she holds all the
weapons of the great trinity, Lord Brahma, Bishnu and Shiva. There are various
interpretations for her forms. She is seen as the combined divine aspect of the three
supreme Goddesses, Saraswati,Laxmi and Parwati, and the very form of Adi Shakthi, the
primordial feminine energy. The four of her five heads are also said to represent the four
vedas, while the fifth denotes the supreme Almighty himself. However, some depictions
show her as the consort of Lord Brahma, where she is holding a book in hand denoting
knowledge and is seen with a white swan.
Chanting of the mantra and worshipping of the Goddess, bestows great sanctity to
everything that the devotees undertake. They get blessed with sharp intelligence,
exceptional radiance, great enthusiasm and tremendous zeal, so as to take on
responsibilities and complete them successfully. The Goddess answers their sincere
prayers by removing their obstacles and solving their problems, and bestowing them with
strength, wealth, prosperity and success. The prayers also purify the self and can lead to
immense spiritual attainments.
