In recent times there has been a large leap in what is available technology-wise, there is no doubt that there can be completely self-sufficient washers manufactured requiring no electricity or little human input. The problem that exists is that as the level of technology required rises, the more engineers needed to design it, and the more staff needed to build it increases, so does price- and apart from trying to build a washing machine which is to be implemented into a particular environment, there must be consideration that the optimum level of resources and technology
available cannot be utilized; in order to create a design that that is affordable to our market.
A pedal-powered washing machine would allow women to wash clothes faster and with less strain. Conditions vary in developing countries, but women in many regions are washing clothes manually while they could be doing more profitable or rewarding work elsewhere. We hope through our project we have designed or at least help clarify the design - concept of a pedal-powered washing machine. Hopefully, such helpful tools become a common usage.

CHALLENGE
3. GOAL
To design an inexpensive and durable pedal-powered washing machine for
use in rural areas to gently wash clothes.
Due to cost constraints, the washing machine is to be shared among several
families or can be used by a local entrepreneur to run a laundering service.
The washing machine must be easy to build and maintain locally with local
materials, easy to operate (minimal required steps), and easy to power by
women or children.
It must also be more comfortable to use than manual methods and culturally
acceptable.
6. PROTOTYPE
It consist of the two
drums attached
horizontally to a shaft.
Outer drum is fixed
whereas inner drum
rotates.
Inner drum is attached
with the shaft.
The shaft is rotated by the
gear chain arrangement
consisting drive gear and
driven gear ,drive gear is
attached with the pedal
which rotates on pedaling
while driven gear is
attached to the shaft on
which drums are mounted.

10. CUTTING OF PLYWOOD TO CREATE THE BASE
Taking the measurement for making the
stand on which drum will be mounted.
Cutting the plywood .
17. STRUCTURE
It consist of cycle frame and the metal angle base .
The structure provides supports to the whole machine , one side of the structure
is cleaning system and other side it has the cycle frame welded with the metal
angle base.
Cycle frame is provided with the seat for the users to sit and pedal the machine.
18. ATTACHMENT OF CYCLE FRAME
Cycle frame is used in the
washing machine
Cycle frame being attached
to the metal base
19. THE DRIVE TRAIN
It consist of sprocket , gear set , transmission chain and shaft.
Sprocket is attached with the pedal and the gear set having five gears
is mounted on the shaft of the cleaning system and thus providing
multiple gear ratios which helps in the variation of speed of the drum.
The transmission chain is used for power transmission from the drive
gear(sprocket) to the driven gear(gear set) attached to the shaft of
the cleaning system.
20. GEAR ARRANGEMENT

which drums are mounted

24. HOW DOES CLEANING TAKE PLACE??
Cleaning
action is
divided into
three main
parts:-
Washing stage
Rinse stage
Drying stage
25. WASHING STAGE
Loading of the clothes in the inner drum along with detergent and water.
About one third drum will be filled with water to enhance the mechanical cleaning process by
allowing the water to slosh.
The washer will need to be spinning at about 85 RPM, this will allow the clothes to tumble in a
desirable fashion, any faster than this and the garments will be forced to the edge of the inner
drum and will not fall off the wall of the washer.
If the washer is moving too slow the clothing will not climb high enough up the wall before it
tumbles, this is also undesirable.
It is unknown how long exactly the washing process will need to take place for, but research
shows that similar devices require around 20-30 minutes , whilst this does sound like a long
time, there will be virtually no resistance, all the operator will be doing is overcoming the
frictional losses of the washer itself, which will be very little.
26. RINSE STAGE
The next step in the cleaning process is the rinse cycle, this requires all of the
water to be drained out of the drum via the plug at the bottom
The operator then needs to apply a short fast spin of around 110 drum RPM for
45 – 60 seconds to remove as much dirty water as possible.
Another lot of clean water will then be poured into the washer, there will then be
a 5 -10 min rinse process to remove as much soapy water from the clothes as
possible.
The remaining water will then be emptied and collected through the plug at the
bottom and the plug left off.
27. DRYING STAGE
The final stage requires that the drum be spun at 120 RPM for around 8 -10
minutes, this should allow time for a large amount of the water to be forced out
of the garments, this should be achievable as all of the residual water will be
drained before the drying process begins, this will reduce the weight of the
mass that needs to be moved considerably.
28. ADVANTAGES
Uses less water, power, and soap
Cleans as well as commercial washer with similar capacity
Spin dries so no wringing needed
Comfortable to use
Enables women to do more rewarding things
Technology for women
Stimulates micro-enterprise
Community investment that also benefits the poor
Sustainable with local production and maintenance
And most important it is not dependent on any electrical supply.
29. CONCLUSION
A pedal-powered washing machine defines the role of technology in real terms.
Provides a cheap and sustainable solution to many problems washing problems pertaining to
washing clothes. Pedal power washing machine is desirable in developing and under
developing nations as it addresses both economy and health problems. smplicity in design
non technical expertise in its usage and affordability makes pedal power washing machine of
a great value.
There may be some flaws which are concerned to the machine operation but not for its user.
We believe that our project extends at “ TECNOLOGICAL SERVICE” to the common middle
class people.
