→ Uttarakhand has diverse geographical features ranging from snow-capped
mountain peaks in the North to tropical forests in the South; its climate and
vegetationvaryaccordingly.
→ The state was formed in November 2000 by carving out the 13 hill-districts of
Uttar Pradesh.FormerlynamedUttaranchal.
→ Uttarakhand is located at the foothills of the Himalayan mountain ranges. The
state shares border with China (Tibet) in the North and Nepal in the East and
inter-state boundaries with Himachal Pradesh in the West, Northwest and Uttar
Pradeshinthe South.
→ Hindi, Garhwali and Kumaoni are commonly spoken in the state. English is the
medium of educationinmanyof itsschools.

The state is close to the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi, a leading market of the country. It also has excellent connectivity with
the neighboring states.

The state has well-developed social and industrial infrastructure as well as virtual connectivity. It has good power, airport, rail and road
infrastructure. The state has over 36,600 km of road network, 2 domestic airports, 345 km of rail routes and an installed power capacity
of 2,526.9 MW.
Facilitating Infrastructure
The average level of literacy is high level in the state. A large pool of talented human resource is available here as Uttarakhand has some
of the leading educational institutions in the country.

The state has a stable political environment with successive governments that have been committed towards creating a progressive

→ The tertiary sector’s share in GSDP was 52.8 per cent in 2011-12. Trade, hotels
and restaurants – the largest sub-group of the sector – registered a growth of
12.1 percent overthepreviousyear.
→ The secondary sector had fastest growth of 22.7 per cent followed by tertiary
sector (20.8 per cent) and primary sector (12.2 per cent) between 2004-05 to
2011-12.
→ The share of the secondary sector in GSDP was 32.2 per cent in 2011-12; its
growth was mainly driven by manufacturing, which recorded a growth of 28.2
percentbetween2004-05and2011-12.

→ Sugarcane,wheat, rice andpotatoarethe key agriculturalproductsof thestate.
→ In 2009-10, the total food grain production of the state was around 1.7 million
tonnes.
→ Sugarcane is the major crop in the state with production of about 5 million

→ Total road network in the state was 36,614.2 km in 2010-11. According to
Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, National Highways running through
the statehada total lengthof 2,042 km.
→ State Highways length was 3,788km, Majordistrict roadlength was 3,321.9 km
andvillage roadstotaledto 13,282.2km in2010-11.
→ As of June 2012, there were 3 Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects in the
roadsectorthat areunderconstruction.

→ The state has two domestic airports: one at Jolly Grant in the Dehradun
districtandanotherat Pant Nagar intheUdhamSinghNagar district.
→ All flightsconnectthe statetoDelhi.
→ Up-gradation work has been completed at the Jolly Grant airport with the
coordinationof Airport Authorityof India.
→ Because of the hilly terrain, the Government has proposed the construction
of at least,onehelipadperdistrict.
→ The state intends to position air-transport as a reliable all-weather transport

→ As of March 2012, the state had a power generation installed capacity of
2,526.94 MW which consisted of 1,422.97 MW under state utilities, 688.92
MW undercentreutilitiesand415.05 MW underprivate sector.
→ The power generation installed capacity in the state has increased from 2,355.7
MW in2007-08to2,526.9 MW in 2011-12.
→ The state is in the process of implementing and testing the public private
partnershipmodelinthe powersector.

→ The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), was established to look
after electricity transmission and distribution in the state after Uttarakhand’s
separationfrom Uttar Pradeshin 2000.
→ The transmission function was later entrusted to Power Transmission
Corporationof UttarakhandLimited (PTCUL).
→ Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL) controls the state hydro power
generation.
→ The state’s power sector is regulated by the Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory
Commission(UERC).

→ Uttarakhand is being developed as an ‘Energy State’ to tap its huge Hydro
Electric Power(HEP)potentialof approximately25,450MW.

→ Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), 14
projects costing US$ 91 million have been sanctioned for Dehradun, Nainital
andHaridwar.
→ The projects were sanctioned between 2007 and2011.Some of the key areas of
development are roads and flyovers, water supply, sewerage and solid-waste
management.
→ The total water supply to Dehradun city is 127.05 MLD of which 76 per cent
(102.51 MLD) is supplied from ground water sources while the remaining
24.54 MLD is supplied from surface sources. The average per capita supply in
the city is124 LPCD.
→ About 50 per cent of the population of Dehradun city is covered with sewerage
system.

• SIDCUL, a Government of Uttarakhand enterprise, was incorporated as a limited
company in 2002. It has equity participation from the Union Bank of India (UBI),
the Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) and Small Industries Development Bank of
India (SIDBI).
• SIDCUL functions as the nodal agency of the state to administer all existing
Government of India (GoI) and Government of Uttarakhand schemes for
industrialisation and industrial promotion. The corporation provides the industrial
units with the requisite information and guides them on the approvals needed for
potential investors. It is a multipurpose company for industrial promotion
investment and infrastructure development.
• The corporation’s key aim is to promote industrial development in the state;
provide financial assistance by way of debt, equity, or venture capital; develop
infrastructure; and assist private initiatives in the industry. It also implements and
manages projects and provides specialised consultancy for finances and
construction. It allows the industries and infrastructure projects in the state to be
developed either directly or through special purpose vehicles, joint ventures,
assisted companies, etc.
