2. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a
medical imaging technique that uses
magnets and radio waves to create
pictures of the organs and tissues within
the body. These images can be used to
evaluate your body’s structure and
function. It is especially useful for the
musculoskeletal system.

be taken from the patient before entering
the scanner room
Ask the patient to remove all metal
object including keys, coins, wallet, any
cards with magnetic strips, jewellery,
hearing aid and hairpins
Ask the patient to undress and change
into a hospital gown

be explained to the patient before the
scan
Gadolinium should only be given to the
patient if GFR is >30
If possible provide a chaperone for
claustrophobic patients (e.g. relative or

coil and immobilise with cushions

mid neck (1 inch below the chin in chin
down position)
