WDM-PON can realize the multiplexing and demultiplexing between two communication channels. It
can expand the capacity of a single fiber to achieve bidirectional communication, which can be widely
used in optical network upgrades and expansion. This article will provide some knowledge about
WDM-PON.
What is WDM-PON?
Wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical network (WDM-PON) is an access network
technology that has the potential to significantly alter carrier infrastructures. In addition,
WDM-PON uses WDM multiplexing/demultiplexing technology to ensure that data signals can be
divided into individual outgoing signals that are connected to buildings or homes.

Architecture of WDM-PON
WDM-PON creates a wavelength-based logical point-to-point (P2P) architecture upon a physical
point-to-multipoint (P2MP) fiber network topology. P2P architecture consists of an optical line
terminal (OLT), optical distribution network (ODN), and optical network unit (ONU). The OLT and
ONU should be able to emit and receive light of different wavelengths. Wavelength selection is
achieved by arrayed waveguide-grating (AWG) filtering at the user.
Benefits of WDM-PON
WDM-PON provides high reliability, high bandwidth, high security, high channel isolation, low
latency, low insertion loss, low polarization-dependent loss, low cost, low fiber counts,
plug-and-play ONU, simple operation and maintenance (O&M), and easy deployment.
Applications
WDM-PON is used in the PON system, CATV System, FTTH, FTTB, FTTC, FTTO, FTTA, 5G
front-haul/back-haul, etc.
