SIMV vs PSV
2. Synchronized Intermittent Mandatoy Ventilation (SIMV
) mode is a combined mode
( mandatory breath+spontaneous breath(
If the patient triggers the ventilator, a set tidal volume
will not be delivered.
in this mode if the patient trigger a breath the full 500
ml isn’t reached, this means the patient is responsible f
or the volume received during a spontaneous or a trig
ger breath.
So if the patient wants a lower volume during their spo
ntaneous efforts they will receive a lower volume. If the
patient is taking good volumes during their spontaneo
us breaths, things may indicate that weaning might be
possible.
3. Pressure support ventilation (PS
V) is a spontaneous mode of v
entilation in which each breath
is initiated by the patient but is
supported by constant pressu
re inflation. This method has be
en shown to increase the efficien
cy of inspiration and decrease th
e work of breathing
