1. Introduction: MONTAGE
Narrator: Twitter, facebook, instagram, snapchat, the majority of teenagers today
are seen transfixed to their mobile phones whether it be walking down the
street, in their home or even at their college. College was once a place of
education but nowadays it seems disturbed by the constant student buzz of
social media.

Narrator: Does this reflect your daily routine? Do you find yourself refreshing the
same feed over and over? Even when youre supposed to be concentrating on
college work? Youll find most of your answers will be yes.

Narrator: A 2013 study found 7 in 10 british teachers believed children were
becoming more and more obsessed with social media with half of those polled
believing the fixation was affecting their ability to concentrate in class.
Narrator: We went to the sixth form college solihull to investgate this further
(PAN) and conducted our own research by finding out the opinions on the effects
of social media on education.

Narrator: Results revealed that 90% of our target audience of students use social
media on their phones whilst revising.

Narrator: As well as this, two thirds of teachers at the sixth form college say the
quality of children’s homework is poor as they rush to finish it so they can
communicate with others online.
Narrator: We were keen to find out if the language of textingis also creeping its
way into students handwriting. The communication that happens online is more
than often not proper standard grammar, so is this affecting their written work?
Or have we taught this generation well enough to differentiate between the two.

2. Narrator: However, during our investigation we found an interesting divide
between the teachers at this sixth form. Not all of them share this same view of
social media being a key feature to the failure of education today, but exactly the
opposite.

Narrator: There clearly are some benefits with the use of social media in the
classroom such as better communication between student and teacher, between
parent and teacher, and exchanging information BUT… can we just carry on
ignoring this sad reality?
