North Dakota Oil & Gas Project has Global Implications for Reducing Flare Gas
ORC Technology Utilizes Flare Gas to Generate Emission-Free Electricity
To helpreduce flaringemissions,The EnvironmentallyFriendlyDrillingSystems(EFD), Gulf CoastGreen
Energy, and ElectraTherm,partneredwiththe HESSCorporationtotestthe ElectraThermPower+
Generator™,aleadingdistributedwaste-heat-to-powertechnology, ata NorthDakota oil well toreduce oil
and gas flaring. The projectcapturesthe natural gas thatwouldotherwise be flaredtogenerate emission-
free electricityandreduce oreliminate onsite flaringbyusingthe Power+Generator™. Additionally,it
successfullydemonstratesaneffectivemeansof flare reduction,andchangesthe landscape forindustries
where flaringwaspreviouslybelievedtobe the onlysolution.
Fundingforthe projectwasprovided toGulf Coast GreenEnergy, distributorforthe ElectraThermPower+
Generator, by the ResearchPartnershiptoSecure EnergyforAmerica(RPSEA) programandthe Houston
AdvancedResearchCenter’s(HARC)Environmentally FriendlyDrillingProgram. The goal of the projectisto
demonstrate the Power+Generatorasa solutiontoreducingflaredgas. A shortvideoonthe projectis
available athttps://youtu.be/_srTTY0J_E8.
NorthDakota state regulations requirethatoil andgas companies significantlyreducethe amountof
natural gas that isburnedinflares overthe nextseveral years orface steeppenaltiesand potential
curtailmentof oil production forwellsthatdo not meetthe reductions. ElectraTherm’sPower+Generator
capturesthe waste heatand providescleanmethane utilizationwithoutcapital intensive gasclean-up,
engine ormicroturbine capital costs,andheavymaintenance associated.
TexasA&MUniversity’s Agrilife ResearchInstituteof RenewableNatural Resourcesisconductingemission
monitoringandcomparingemissionsfromdirectflaringversesthe Power+solution.Environmental
ProtectionAgency(USEPA) andNorthDakota Departmentof HealthDivisionof AirQuality(NDDOHAir
Quality) approvedmethods are beingusedduringatwo-daymonitoringeventatthe site. The results are
forthcominganditis believedthatthe Power+solutionwilldramatically reduce emissions andprovide a
beneficial alternativetoflaringforthe O&G industry.
The Power+Generatorapplies OrganicRankine Cycle (ORC)andproprietarytechnologiestogenerate
powerfromlowtemperature heatrangingfrom170-252°F. At the oil well, natural gasthatwould
otherwise be flaredis insteadusedtofuel alow emission industrial boiler. The boilerheatswatertorun
the Power+Generator, andproducescleanenergy (aslow as 9 ppm NOx) thatisusedfor onsite processes,
offsettingthe costof electricityfromthe grid orexpensive diesel generators.
EnvironmentallyFriendlyDrillingSystems(EFD) isencouragedaboutthe preliminaryresultsof the
demonstration. AccordingtoDr. Rich Haut,Directorof EFD, “Projectslike thisallow ustoevaluate new
2. technologiesforthe O&G industryandtofindscience basedsolutionstoindustrychallengeswhichisour
primarymission.”
“The emissionsprofile of the site isgreatlyimproved, the powerisconsumedonsite andthe equipmentis
easyto install withverylittlemaintenance,”saidLoySneary,CEO,Gulf CoastGreenEnergy and Project
Manager. “We are alsoappreciative of HARCandthe EFD for selectingGCGEforthis trial for withouttheir
supportit wouldnothave beenpossible”Snearycontinued.
