The Alliance Party was the ruling coalition in Malaysia from independence in 1957 until it was succeeded by the Barisan Nasional coalition in 1974. It consisted of three major component parties: UMNO, the United Malays National Organisation, which represented the Malay population; MCA, the Malayan Chinese Association, which represented the Chinese population; and MIC, the Malayan Indian Congress, which represented the Indian population. Together these three parties aimed to promote inter-ethnic cooperation and development in the newly independent nation.
