While considering the previous slides, make a
note of any words or terms that you feel you
would like explaining further.
6. So what is the purpose?
Imaginative and unique – “showing, not telling”
Makes the reader imagine they are experiencing the text.
To show the reader the mood of the text.
To appeal to the senses of the reader.
To entertain the reader.
7. Showing not telling
Showing rather than telling allows the reader to experience the writing through
action, senses, thoughts and feelings.
Jordan ran straight out in to the road.
This sentence is TELLING. It is quite boring and does not provide the reader
with much information. It is more difficult for the reader to relate
Carelessly chasing a football, Jordan sprinted into the hustle and bustle of
the noisy high street
This sentence is SHOWING. It uses imagery and senses to allow the reader to
experience the situation.
