Definition of Volunteering
“Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain.”
We trust that being a volunteer with Catholic
Healthcare will be a rewarding and fulfilling
experience.
This induction has been designed to enable a more
meaningful, effective, and engaging on-boarding
experience for you as a volunteer. You are joining a
big team of volunteers across Catholic Healthcare
who willingly contribute time without financial gain
to the lives of many. We love our volunteers and
the common good that they bring to our
organization. We recognize the gift volunteers are
to Catholic Healthcare and to the wider
community.

My Voice - Our volunteers LISTEN.
We listen to people. Clients and Residents feel comfortable to speak up and have
their say.
My Care - Our volunteers support UNIQUE individuals.
We take the time to really get to know each Client and Resident. We understand
what makes them unique. Clients and Residents are involved in developing their
personalized care plan and form strong relationships with the whole Catholic
Healthcare team.

Our Model of Care
My Lifestyle - Our volunteers ENHANCE the lifestyle of people.
Lifestyle programs at Catholic Healthcare are designed in consultation with Clients and
Residents, to enhance their independence, health, wellbeing, and quality of life. Pastoral care
is offered to support their spiritual needs.
My Home - Our volunteers are active in people’s HOMES and COMMUNITIES.
Our Clients and Residents do not live in our workplace. We are volunteering in their homes or
in the community settings in which they live.
My Community - Our volunteers provide COMMUNITY connection and friendships of
choice.
Clients and Residents make connections with each other and develop friendships of their
choice. The Catholic Healthcare team encourage and assist clients and residents to maintain
community connections and relationships.

Rights and
Responsibilities
As a volunteer with Catholic Healthcare you
have both rights and responsibilities as does
the organisation.
The volunteer agrees to perform a specific task
and the organisation agrees to provide the
volunteer with a worthwhile and rewarding
service. In return each has the right to some
basic expectations of each other.
These expectations are covered in detail in your
Volunteer Agreement that you will be asked to
sign before starting your role.

Health, Safety and
Wellbeing for Volunteers
Catholic Healthcare is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all staff,
volunteers and visitors. We actively promote the responsibility of all our people to personally
contribute toward maintaining safe and healthy spaces and relationships.
WHS
The Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws require organisations such as Catholic Healthcare
that engages any paid and volunteer workers ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the
physical and mental health and safety of ALL of its workers. This means that the
organisation you volunteer for must provide you the same protections as its paid workers.
If you are volunteering in a Residential Aged Care home, you must also follow the WHS
practices and directions of the staff in the home you are visiting.

Volunteering Safely
As a volunteer you also have responsibilities under the WHS Act to take reasonable care for
your own health and safety, report and document incidents or accidents and help identify
hazards for everyone’s benefit.
A hazard is anything that has the potential to cause injury or illness to you, the volunteer, the
resident or client, or property. As a volunteer it is important that you participate in hazard
identification by being aware of potential hazards associated with volunteer activities. If you
identify a hazard, you must report this to your supervisor or Volunteer Coordinator or contact
another staff member at the Residential Home or call 1800 225 474 for Home Care clients.
An incident is an event that causes or could cause harm, illness, injury or damage to persons
or property and an accident involves injury to the volunteer or the client or resident or
property damage. Incidents and accidents need to be reported to your Volunteer Coordinator
or Supervisor and documented immediately.

Insurance
Volunteers are covered by personal accident and public liability insurance whilst
engaged in activities officially organised by Catholic Healthcare. It is important that
Volunteers undertake volunteer activities within the time agreed to and that these
activities be documented. Volunteer drivers using their own car are required to
have a full drivers’ licence and comprehensive insurance to be covered for any
damages incurred as a result of an accident.

Duty of Care
Your volunteer agreement refers to a
volunteer having a ‘duty of care’. This is an
expectation that you will use common sense
and exercise reasonable caution in any
activities undertaken with people at Catholic
Healthcare.
A Duty of Care involves ensuring the safety
and wellbeing of volunteers and resident or
clients. Please check with your Volunteer
Coordinator or Supervisor before
undertaking any additional activities that are
not included on your job description.

To ensure everyone’s safety and protection, we ask that volunteers do not get involved in the
resident or client's legal, medical and/or financial affairs. This is to safeguard the volunteer
and protect vulnerable people.
• Under no circumstances should volunteers or their family members or friends borrow
money or lend their money or possessions to a resident or client.
• Volunteers should not help administer any medication or give medical advice.
• Under no circumstances do volunteers or family or friends of volunteers give financial or
legal advice to residents or clients or get involved in their financial affairs. This also
includes telephone and internet banking on behalf of the resident or client. A Volunteer
should not have access to a resident or client’s personal bank details or having access to
their credit card or PIN numbers.

Code of Conduct
Catholic Healthcare’s Code of Conduct identifies the standard of professional
behaviour that is expected of both our paid workers and volunteers.
The Code of Conduct details a set of principles that provide you with guidance on
the expected behaviour required when you are performing duties as a volunteer
with Catholic Healthcare and is referred to in the Catholic Healthcare Volunteer
Agreement.
