1. Ability to observe, assess and evaluate
Lila has consistently been in tune with her group, their feelings and their needs and as a result she has been able to address
their needs accordingly. She has consistently made accurate assessments of her group’s behaviour and the discussions in
the group as well as her progress or lack thereof when planning for her community work project. She has also thoroughly
given insights into her observations of the way in which her group members presented physically, emotionally and
cognitively. Lila consistently evaluated her relationship with her group and their relationship with each other, her group
and community work intervention plans and whether these interventions were meeting the needs of her group and
community. Lila’s assessments and evaluations were always supported by theory demonstrating her depth of insight into
both group and community work practice.
2. Ability to plan and use intervention skills
Lila has shown an exceptional ability to thoroughly plan for both group and community work. She has been consistent in
presenting comprehensive plans that were consistently supported by theory and her own insight. She consistently
demonstrated that she was organized in her planning as well as thorough and logical in her thinking. She always
considered her objectives for both group and community work and made every effort in achieving the set objectives. She
consistently identified a variety of intervention skills often thoroughly explaining when she used the skills and why it was
important to use them. This too she supported with theory resulting in the overall credibility of her practice and practice
skills being strengthened. Lila did however demonstrate the tendency to over think her plans and sometimes think too
broadly resulting in her plans proving to be too much to accomplish within the time period she was given. She has however
learnt to be concise and to fine tune her plans.
3. Ability to use self
Lila has demonstrated the ability to self-reflect well and she has consistently done so on a deep and honest level. This has
indicated that she has good insight into herself as a person and a professional. Lila has easily been able to identify issues of
transference and counter-transference and has demonstrated the ability to address it efficiently and appropriately. She
drew on her professional and personal skills throughout the planning and the implementation of her community work
project. As a result of her confidence in her abilities and plans she succeeded in facilitating a highly commendable group
and community work process.
4. Ability to present
The student is confident in communicating her field practice work and as a result of her thorough planning she presents
good insight into her work and skills. She paces herself well, presents herself professionally and generally communicates
content that is comprehensive and supported by theoretical knowledge.
5. Ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with practice
Lila has consistently consulted a wide range of prescribed and contextual theory often utilizing over 15 relevant references
per report. Her integration of theoretical knowledge with practice is commendable and cannot be faulted as this she has
proven to do exceptionally well. The relevant use of theory and appropriate integration of theory demonstrates that she
understood what she was doing and practiced efficiently, ethically and according to a theoretical base.
6. Ability to use supervision
This student has grown so much confidence in her Social Work skills and knowledge and has practiced in such an efficient,
professional and ethical manner that, she did not really need supervision. She appeared to be a strong student academically
and professionally and often attempted to seek resolution to her own issues or concerns and then consulting with me to

clarify if she was on the right track or not. Lila has shown that she is more confident in her practice and utilize supervision
in terms of gaining support and advice with regards to healthy coping strategies to deal with her overwhelming academic
schedule and some personal health and family issues which sometimes hampered her concentration . She shared openly and
honestly in supervision both on an academic and personal level often triggering others to share in this way too thus
affecting a process of deep reflection allowing me to affectively assess where she and other students were at and to
accurately determine their needs.
7. Growth areas/comments on students overall development
Lila has been an absolute pleasure to supervise as she has always been willing to learn and further develop her Social
Work skills and knowledge. She applied all suggestions made to her and was not afraid to challenge me when she had a
differing opinion regarding her practice, planning or implementation of group and community work practice. She easily
accepted the mistakes she made or areas she needed to work on and applied herself well I terms of improving. I am
confident in her abilities and trust that she will be an asset to any organization she works in after she graduates. Her
passion for the helping profession especially those who are disadvantaged were evident in all that she has done at Sullivan
Primary. She has left her agency with a lasting impression; she has presented UCT and herself very well, giving a good
impression to students and staff at Sullivan of student social workers and the social work profession. She needs to learn to
proof read her work so as to avoid unnecessary grammatical and punctuation errors which take away from the quality of
her work. She needs to continuously practice being concise as her reports sometimes appeared cluttered with unnecessary
information. She also needs to learn to not overwhelm herself by over thinking her plans as a result of striving to achieve
meeting the high expectations she sets for herself. Lastly I would advise Lila to be aware of taking on too much as a result
of not being able to resist helping people as this can result in her reaching burnout early on in her Social Work career.
