Conflict Resolution Models
Leia Skywalker, Field Coordinator with Rebel
School of Social Work, worked with Hans Solo,
a student in the MSW program, to set up a
practicum placement at Tatooine Community
Services (TCS). The placement process went
smoothly and was confirmed to begin in the
spring semester. In December, prior to the
start of the spring semester Leia was assigned
a field course to act as Liaison and learned that
Hans was one of the students in her class. Leia
did not think much about this, as she had
previously had students she placed in her field
courses. During the 3rd week of the semester
Hans scheduled to meet with Leia to talk about
the placement. During this meeting Hans
shared that his experience at TCS was not
going so well. He shared that he was not
getting any training, had not had any weekly
supervision meetings yet, and did not have any
practicum assignments to work. Hans asked if
Leia would find him a different placement. As a
result, Leia was confronted for the first time
with a dual role conflict:

Instructor
Fran Field Director is the only field director/coordinator at Change
the World University School of Social Work. Fran works with Sam
Student to plan his generalist placement which started in the fall
semester at Shalom Shelter for families. Sam is a marginal student
whose participation in the planning process left Fran feeling uncertain
about his ability to be successful. During the agency vetting process,
Fran was impressed with Mary MSW Field Instructor’s experience
and felt confident that Sam would receive the needed modeling and
guidance. Three weeks into the placement, Sam informs Lucy Liaison
that Mary MSW Field Instructor resigned and without any notice, left
the agency. Lucy is new to her role as liaison and as she was instructed
to do, she contacted Fran Field Director right away. As any field
director would do, Fran attempted to negotiate with Mary to see if
she would still provide supervision to Sam. Unfortunately, Mary is
unable to accommodate this request and all of Fran’s other attempts
to identify an off-site MSW Field Instructor are met with negative
responses as well. During this time period, Fran works with Andrea
Agency Contact closely to make sure that there is a point person for
Sam to seek out as needed. Andrea kindly identifies Tara Task
Supervisor who has a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, many years’
experience at the shelter and kindly agrees to work with Sam. After
several weeks pass and Fran is unable to identify an off-site MSW
Field Instructor, it is decided that Fran will serve in this role. Initially,
Fran is pleased with Sam’s performance and she receives positive
feedback from Tara. Very soon after this arrangement begins,
however, Sam describes his regular practice of meeting with some
clients outside of the shelter and of connecting with them on social
media. When Fran explores this practice, it becomes evident that Tara
is aware and as her practice is not informed by the NASW Code of
Ethics, she does not recognize this as a problem.

During the agency vetting process, Fran was impressed with Mary MSW Field Instructor’s experience and felt confident that Sam would receive the needed modeling and guidance. Three weeks into the placement, Sam informs Lucy Liaison that Mary MSW Field Instructor resigned and without any notice, left the agency. Lucy is new to her role as liaison and as she was instructed to do, she contacted Fran Field Director right away. As any field director would do, Fran attempted to negotiate with Mary to see if she would still provide supervision to Sam. Unfortunately, Mary is unable to accommodate this request and all of Fran’s other attempts to identify an off-site MSW Field Instructor are met with negative responses as well. During this time period, Fran works with Andrea Agency Contact closely to make sure that there is a point person for Sam to seek out as needed. Andrea kindly identifies Tara Task Supervisor who has a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, many years’ experience at the shelter and kindly agrees to work with Sam. After several weeks pass and Fran is unable to identify an off-site MSW Field Instructor, it is decided that Fran will serve in this role. Initially, Fran is pleased with Sam’s performance and she receives positive feedback from Tara. Very soon after this arrangement begins, however, Sam describes his regular practice of meeting with some clients outside of the shelter and of connecting with them on social media. When Fran explores this practice, it becomes evident that Tara is aware and as her practice is not informed by the NASW Code of Ethics, she does not recognize this as a problem.
