Empathy for effective leadership:
How to practice it
Empathy is the ability to experience and relate to the thoughts, emotions, and
experience of others. It goes beyond simple sympathy in a way that an empath
understands and supports others with compassion and sensitivity. Empathy is
believed to be a fundamental aspect of leadership.

So if empathy is a necessary ingredient in winning, e ective leadership, how does
one cultivate and practice it? Here are some ways.
Listen to people
Listen using one’s ears, eyes, as well as heart, and pay attention to di erent
aspects of the body language and the hidden emotions behind what is being said.
Pay attention to non-verbal cues and communication
Know that this is the way people usually communicate what they feel or think,

even when their verbal cues point to altogether di erent meanings.
Be fully present
When someone in your team talks to you, don’t let your mind wander, don’t play
with your watch or phone, and don’t check your email. How would it feel if your
boss does that to you?
Practice the ‘93 percent rule’
Did you know that words or the things that are said account for a mere seven
percent of the total message received by people? The other 93 percent of the
message being communicated when one speaks is in the tone of voice as well as
body language. Understand this closely when others discuss their thoughts and
feelings.
Genuinely praise and recognize e ort
When giving praise, make the words memorable. Try to catch people doing the
right things.

Build leaders to achieve your dreams
Most successful people have a competent team behind them. The likes of Bill
Gates, the late Steve Jobs, and Elon Musk were creative self-starters and
exceptional innovators, which enabled them to invent the technologies they had
become known for. However, if it were not for the team they built around them,
the respective empires with which they are identi ed now would probably not be
here.

Those who want to be successful then, whether entrepreneurs or organizations,
should give importance to developing leaders with the necessary character,
competence, and commitment. It does not come easy, though, because it requires
a lot of patience.
The rst thing needed in building leaders is to surround oneself with the right
people. Steve Jobs had plenty of help early on, thanks to various personalities
such as Alan Kay, John Couch, Michael Scott, Mike Markkula, and more. Later in
his life, as his business evolved, he found Tim Cook, who eventually became his
successor.
The next step is to foster an environment where these people can thrive and
become the best versions of themselves. This involves training, mentoring, and
providing them an atmosphere of continuous learning. Also, they should be given
leeway to take risks and even fail, because, with the right attitude, mistakes can
serve as teaching opportunities.

Sure re ways to build self-esteem
Working on one’s con dence and self-esteem is key in any undertaking and a
crucial aspect for achieving success in life. Here are some tips to build and boost
your self-esteem.

A good rst step is to stop comparing your body to those of others. Self-esteem is
about what’s inside, not the façade of outside appearances. Even those who are
physically attractive are wracked by insecurities. Keep in mind that you are your
own unique person.
However, while outward appearance is separate from self-worth, it’s great to
develop a sense of fashion. Power dressing, for example, is proven to be a sound
way to gain con dence. The idea is that fashion allows you to be more proactive
about your body, and is a manifestation of treating it with respect. Of course, do
this to make yourself feel good, not just to impress others.
Another key thing to remember is that your self-esteem is not determined by
being in a relationship. Many young people feel the pressure to have a partner,

but self-con dence is about you being secure about yourself rst. Embrace your
single status and be independent and principled; the rest will follow.
Finally, don’t let the number of likes and comments you get on social media
determine your sense of accomplishment and self-worth. This has become a
dominant trend in this internet-driven world, and a lot of people equate a
perceived dismissed post to failure. Do not get so invested in your post and avoid
posting just to gain likes. Share signi cant life events and ideas that bene t
others, not just what you ate for lunch.

The Workplace
It’s often that people lose their drive to go to work because they don’t feel
appreciated and valued. They start to think that everyday is as mundane as it
could be, with all interactions being the same as the days before. Lack of

Creates a culture
Leaders play an important role in the team, and in the workplace. A great leader
must know how to recognize and appreciate e orts made by a team member.
When members notice their leader appreciating and thanking fellow members of
the team for a job well done, the members will eventually follow. This will create a
culture of gratitude and appreciation in the workplace. Appreciation is a known
catalyst of change, boosting the morale of the employees, and encouraging them
to perform their tasks excellently.

Builds camaraderie
Employees spend a lot of time together either in their o ces or in the eld. After
knowing each other for some time, a camaraderie is built among them. But this
isn’t always the case. If teammates lack respect and appreciation towards each
other, misunderstandings might escalate if not resolved immediately. One must
take a conscious step in thanking and appreciating his workmates so as to build
trust and create harmony.
A person always longs to be in a place where he is appreciated and valued. Making
the workplace an area where one feels secure of his worth is a step everyone must
be willing to take.

For The Win: Optimism In The Age

We have other ways of looking at optimism. Terms can help us understand how
we view and interpret things. Some people call it positive thinking, working
within the assumption that everything’s going to turn out just ne. The silver
lining has to be there when the time is ripe, thus the light at the end of that long,
creepy tunnel.

But what does optimism really do? How does it help us? We have heard others
mock it many times, calling it “blind faith.” With all the lemons life keeps
throwing at us, there seems to be nothing else more logical than making
lemonade.
Experts say that a positive outlook is an important predictor of resilience. Being
steadfast helps us endure any hardship, no matter the odds. Some studies put
forward a number of physical bene ts although it will be more di cult to insist
on a conclusive physiological proof. Researchers continue to work on their studies
to assure us there are plenty of sh in the sea.
In reality, optimists do not necessarily give up control and mindlessly trust in
something they cannot completely grasp. It is not true that an optimist keeps a
handy pair of default rose-colored glasses just in case an unpleasant situation
forces her to wing it.

Optimists recognize the danger quite clearly. And like what everyone else
thought, it makes sense to take cover. They always look forward to going out after
the storm, though: not to pick owers but to clear the mess and live another day.

Taking Risks Leads To Great Rewards
No business idea will ever push
through if the entrepreneur is not
willing to take a risk. What-ifs will just
hound people who are averse to taking
risks. However, there are things to
consider before we dive into
something. Risks are best when
calculated and decided on for oneself.
Only then will one reap the rewards.

Recklessness is not risk-taking. This
must be made clear at the get-go.
Decisions made, both in life and in business, need to be informed ones, especially
when a career or nancial stability (or even our health) is at stake.
When the goal becomes clear, one has to go out of his comfort zone and keep at
something until it becomes part of that new, expanded area of comfort. This is
not just true in business but in adventures in life as well. Consider parachuting or
a more common hobby like snorkeling. Being seized by fear will not allow people
to expand their horizons. People can be meticulous about the sky diving gear for
diving or exploring farther from the beach, but it will all be for naught unless they
try.
Another thing to remember is that
those who take risks adapt faster to
new technology and new ways of
approaching things. Most people stick
to habits and are afraid of change. But
in, say, an online startup, those who
can command the internet and use
smartphones will always have the
edge.

Leadership in business is probably the single most de ning element in the total
organizational e ort. Leadership is about making other people better for their
own sake and for the sake of the whole team. Here’s how the winning attitude in
business leadership is formed.

A good business leader always starts with a positive attitude. He believes rst
before he doubts. He takes manageable leaps before he recalculates deliberately.
He trusts his subordinates before he second guesses them. With the attitude of
positivity, one creates a baseline of faith which results in success.
The attitude of dedication is part of the winning formula. If a leader is fully
invested in the idea that supports the hopes of his organization, then he will be
accepting of the sacri ces that are needed in order to achieve his goals. This
makes it easier for him to go the extra mile in his work, whether this means
longer hours, or going out of his way to mentor a subordinate.
Visualization is also a huge aspect of the winning attitude. A leader should know
where he is headed. This starts with a very clear picture of the state of things he
wants to see in the future. With this, he then gradually creates a clear path
towards his ambition, as he recognizes the obstacles that he needs to overcome.
Winners do not win at every juncture on the path. However, they never run out of
the enthusiasm to proceed, especially when it is most di cult to do so.

The other 93 percent of the message being communicated when one speaks is in the tone of voice as well as body language. Understand this closely when others discuss their thoughts and feelings. Self-esteem is about what’s inside, not the façade of outside appearances. Even those who are physically attractive are wracked by insecurities. Keep in mind that you are your own unique person. Some people call it positive thinking, working within the assumption that everything’s going to turn out just ne. We have heard others mock it many times, calling it “blind faith.” With all the lemons life keeps throwing at us, there seems to be nothing else more logical than making lemonade. Experts say that a positive outlook is an important predictor of resilience. Being steadfast helps us endure any hardship, no matter the odds. Some studies put forward a number of physical bene ts although it will be more di cult to insist on a conclusive physiological proof. Researchers continue to work on their studies to assure us there are plenty of sh in the sea.
