How the right practice makes perfect learning
Outside the Matrix films, not everything can be mastered 'just in time'. Skills and techniques need to be practiced and every new situation must be rapidly assessed to decide which technique is appropriate to apply. At a time when everything seems to be moving more quickly, how do learning and development professionals support busy people to develop and master business critical skills?
Join LEO's experts as they outline various approaches for supporting busy people to master key skills. Drawing on real-world examples they will provide practical tips on a range of methods including:
· Games with purpose
· Mobile games
· Simulations
· Spaced practice
· Blending techniques

Intro slide - Tell ‘em what we are going to tell ‘em
There is more and more to learn and less and less time to learn it in
People have less time for training – and there is more and more to learn – Piers type examples
One solution is to move to just in time performance support – to help people get good at things quickly – to teach them how to search rather than teaching them knowledge – JLR example
That is the perfect solution for product knowledge but will it work for everything ...
The customers know more about the cars than the dealers – they have researched online – but there is info here that they wouldn’t find online – vehciles coming out every month or two whereas before it would be every six months – coming in so fast that the information isn’t even out until they are launched because they don’t release the information before prelaunch because of secrecy
Punters can get stats about power and square footage of boot – but on that ipad are demo files and videos on how certain things work like the breaking system – which people don’t really understand but you show a really nice video to teh customer and it explains it all – you don’t have to know about this but you have to know where to find it
For example, it doesn’t work for skills – you don’t get to be a soloist in an orchestra by turning up with an ipad that takes you through the basics of violin playing, and while a every pilot steps into her or his plane provided with a huge number of performance support manuals we also expect them to have some flying experience behind them
You’ve probably heard about this. What does it actually mean? Explanation
what does it mean for us as L&D professionals? Is it at all relevant?
There are many areas where skills needs to be learnt - how to manage a team, or how to present and communicate, or how to sell, or how to speak a foreign language, how to understand financial reports - technology can shrink the length of time it takes to build experience
As l&d professionals, we need to align with business goals and one of them is to develop expertise
What is expertise? Skills and situational awareness -what does that mean – examples
There is increasing evidence that expertise is domain specific and not that transferable
So how do you teach and maintain skills?
Video demos, simulations, mobile practice, casual games
Identify which skills need regular maintenance and which don’t (the difference between speaking a language and riding a bike) – design work to maintain skills, design in practice opportunities

How do you help people develop situational awareness - scenarios
Again, have a strategy for building this up in manageable chunks over time
How do you help people develop situational awareness?
Sharing experiences that they haven’t had – portals to enable sharing of practice
Case studies, stories, checklists and job aids
Again, have a strategy for building this up in manageable chunks over time
We need a strategy that considers both careers over time, and businesses strategy over a period of years, and within that need an arsenal of tactics that are aligned to today’s challenges
