India is the largest producer of onions globally with Maharashtra producing the most at 6,603 metric tons, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 2,965 metric tons and Gujarat at 1,410 metric tons based on 2016-2017 third advance estimates. The top ten onion producing states are Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh which collectively produce over 22,000 kilograms per hectare on average across more than 913,000 hectares.
