CULLB602C Use, evaluate and extend own information literacy
skills
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use,
evaluate and extend one’s own information literacy skills at a complex level. The unit
focuses on research, analysis and communication of information, ideas and concepts
at a complex level, plus the evaluation and extension of one’s own information
literacy skills.
The Assessment methods for this units may include Assignments, Class work,
Demonstrations, Discussion/ Questioning, Journal, Observations, Practical
Exercises, Portfolio, Projects, Presentations, Tests, and/or Work Samples.
This unit contains Employability Skills.
The dimensions of competence will indicate the ability to:
• Apply relevant skills to the task
• Manage the task
• Respond to contingencies
• Work appropriately within the environment
These elements will be assessed holistically.
1. Research and analyse information, ideas and concepts
2. Communicate information, ideas and concepts
3. Evaluate own work and skills
4. Extend own information literacy skills
Research and demonstrate the use of latest and emerging technologies in
information provision. This must include the following:
• Set up, register and create a blog
• Comment on other technologies by posting to the blog on a regular basis
• Upload to Flickr
• Discover some Flickr mashups and 3rd party sites and post to the blog
• Learn about RSS feeds and set up a newsreader account
• List at least 5 useful library related blogs and/or RSS feeds
• Use an online image generator
• Use Rollyo to create a search tool
• Use Del.icio.us or Technorati to create tags and bookmarks
• Post to a wiki
• Upload a video to YouTube
• Create &/or download a podcast
In addition, you may be required to research and demonstrate other emerging
technologies.
Critically evaluate a few different perspectives on Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and online
productivity tools and post your evaluations on your blog. Post comments on other
students’ blogs as well.
Prepare a presentation on an emerging technology which best illustrates the ways in
which the technology can be used to meet the needs of library customers.
Contextualise the demonstration by explaining the rationale behind your choice of
technology.
