"Grappling with the coursework and completing this program has given me
a solid foundation and clear-eyed understanding of what comprises a well-
integrated, comprehensive UVM program, how to attain it, and drive it. I
am now better equipped to navigate in my own UVM landscape, have a
much broader set of problem-solving skills, and will be prepared to engage
the UVM industry as an active participant with a growth mindset. This
program is a real game-changer and a must for anyone who intends to
make UVM a career!“

“The credibility that comes with this credential has

million more bucks on my budget this year. I attribute

Utility Vegetation Management Program
Editor's Notes
Welcome to the overview of the Utility Vegetation Management Program. I am Jessica Tomaszewski, UVM Program Manager.
This program is being offered through the Wisconsin Forestry Center at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the College of Natural Resources. This program is a partnership between the WFC and Utility Arborist Association and the Utility Vegetation Management Association.
This comprehensive training program is designed and facilitated by industry professionals, who will lead you through the knowledge and skills needed to plan and manage sustainable utility vegetation management (UVM) program plans. This UVM certificate is earned by completing 2 certificates and a credential preparation course which are project-based and 100% online. Courses are designed for applied learning for working professionals. There are no set days and times to engage with the course so participants can do the weekly course requirements on their own schedule. The goal of our courses is to enhance the understanding and application of industry's best practices beyond participants’ current Dailey tasks to move to understand and enact comprehensive UVM management.
The program consists of 2 certificates: Foundations of UMV and UVM Professional certificates and the UVM Program Planning credential preparation course. Certificates are earned sequentially and completion of all 3 components are need to earn the Certified Utility Vegetation Management Credential from UAA.
The first certificate, Foundations of UVM, will consist of 5 courses and provided the basic terminology and report writing skills that provide a solid foundation to the UVM program.
North American Electrical Systems (5 weeks)
Exploring energy generation, transmission and distribution system and how its impact on vegetation management.
Utility Arboriculture (5 weeks)
Exploring vegetation regions and characteristics that will affect the type and growth of vegetation impacting electrical systems. Explore vegetation control methods.
Leadership and Organizations (4 weeks)
Explore how leadership styles and skills impact UVM. Explore organization systems and processes within your organization impact UVM.
Program and Project Management (5 weeks)
Examine the program and project management processed and how they relate to UVM.
Integrated Vegetation Management (3 weeks)
Apply a systematic approach to UVM program planning.
Courses must be taken sequentially. All courses can be completed in one year if taken each time a course is offered. (If you take a break, it may take you longer than a year based on the timing of the course offerings.)
Upon completion of the Foundations of UVM certificate, participants can transition on to the UVM Professional Certificate with support from you employer.
UVM Compliance and Stakeholder Management;
Focusing on the program and project management processes involved with managing compliance, stakeholders, communication and documentation.
UVM Scope, Cost, and Procurement Management;
Starting with a clear scope of UVM work to be completed will help your program stay on track for scheduling, budgeting and procuring resources.
UVM Safety, Risk, and Quality Management;
Courses must be taken sequentially. All courses can be completed in one year if taken each time a course is offered. (If you take a break, it may take you longer than a year based on the timing of the course offerings.)
Once participants have completed the UVM Professional Certificate they need to integrate the knowledge and skills within all the previous courses to create UVM Program Plan. In the UVM Program Planning credential preparation course they will do just that. While keeping safety, compliance, best practices, and ROW Stewardship in the forefront, participants will systematically utilize the program and project management processes, tools, and techniques to develop an effective, efficient, and sustainable UVM program plan based on integrated vegetation management best practices.
Once participants have completed the Foundations of UVM Certificate, the UVM Professional Certificates and the UVM Program Planning course, they are eligible to earn the Certified Utility Vegetation Management Credential. To be eligible you also need 2-years of work-related experience, membership in UAA and commitment to UVM Code of Ethics. Your UVM Program Plan will be reviewed by the UAA UVM Committee who will award the credential.
To be successful in our UVM courses, participants read the weekly module, participate in discussion and assemble weekly project tasks. Each week facilitators give feedback on the project task so that information can be incorporated into the final project. We expect that all of this will take between 8 to 15 hours per week.
Our anticipated course schedule moving forward.
In the fall of 2020, PG&E teamed up with the UAA to create a scholarship program designed to advance the industry and promote the current and future workforce. PG&E has agreed to fund scholarships for the UVM Certificate Program for 2020-2022. Scholarships are available to individuals living in California and bordering states and will cover 100% of tuition for the program. This scholarship program covers all the course fees, but students are still responsible for purchasing their textbooks.
