3. Director
The director is the same for both these films
meaning that he understands the genre and
the requirements that the genre entails.
It will also be noticeable from the ideas, shots
and angles that are used to portray the genre
and the range of these will be important for the
audience’s understanding of the film.
From people that have seen either of the films
and not the other. From this the audience can
built expectations and anticipation as they
can understand what the previous film was
like and if they enjoyed that they can expect
to enjoy this one as well.
As they were both very successful films this
suggests that the director was also a
success.
4. Associated actors
Michael Caine stars in both of these films, not
as the main character but plays an important
role in the development of the characters and
the plots. His presence also allows the
audience an incite into the genre of thriller as
this is his most associated genre that he
participates in giving the audience the
knowledge of the genre.
Within the films he is both their adviser
and their friend. His role is an important
one however does not overshadow the
performance of the main characters and
their roles in the film.
5. Location
City based. They are both shot with large
buildings and landscapes showing the scale
of the different places and how many people
are there an the amount of lives in jeopardy.
Although both set in fictional locations such
as ‘Gotham city’ mainly set in New York
however including locations from all round the
world.
Similarly inception uses made up places as
they are all within the mind and the targets
are imagining the places meaning well
recognized land marks are not used.
6. Props
Guns play an important part in both of these
films and within the thriller genre itself.
Between these two films they are used in
different ways however.
Inception both sides have the gun sharing the
power between the two sides however the
dark knight the bad side has the guns and the
batman does not appear with a gun at any
point reflecting the power is with the joker.
Also between the two when the guns appear in
inception they are not yet fired they simply
have a presence and show they have power in
the film but not yet cause destruction.
In the dark knight the gun is fired simply in the
air showing a disregard for the power
reflecting the greediness of the joker with
power.
8. Shadows
Shadows are used in the daylight at the
beginning of the trailer to foreshadow the
coming of darkness later on.
Inception shows the movement to create
the shadow showing that things will be
changing to bring the darkness and has a
cause.
However The Dark Knight simply uses the
sunlight and the height of his building to
show that how high up and powerful he is
will be the reason for darkness.
9. Editing
They both use fast editing to reflect the quick pace of the film and the excitement and thrill of it. The
different between the two is that the dark knight has screens of simply fading out to black to create
suspense and tension between shots however Inception always has action on the screen and
something happening.
10. Reflection
• From this research I can see that the thriller genre
requires fast paced editing.
• Shadows also pay an important part reflecting character
types and importance and authority in the movie.
• The music also has to be chosen specifically fit to reflect
the genre of the film.
• Props are also needed to show what it includes, as I
can’t use guns I will use other props relating to the genre
instead.
