2. INTRODUCTION
The president of Tamaqua Transfer & Recycling, Inc., Larry Wittig is
a successful businessman who also serves as a managing partner
at Wittig CPA's. Aside from overseeing two Tamaqua-based
businesses, Larry Wittig supports educational initiatives, including
formerly serving on the Governor's Advisory Commission on
Academic Standards.
The purpose of the Pennsylvania commission is to craft more
precise and rigorous educational standards to promote increased
student performance in core academic subjects like literacy and
math. The Commission works to collect and evaluate academic
ideas and proposals from people throughout the state. However, it
has a particular interest in obtaining feedback from parents of
enrolled children, as well as community and business leaders.
The Commission membership is limited to a total of 14 members,
all of whom are appointed by the Governor and serve in a volunteer
capacity. In addition to the State Secretary of Education and four
members of the State Legislature, the Governor selects nine
members from the public at large. The job of the commissioners is
to evaluate the various proposals for new or revised academic
standards and create a report for the Governor with their
recommendations.
