Roles and Functions of Educational
Technology in the 21st Century
Education
Administrators and Teachers are actively
searching for ways to prepare students for the
future, and the educational system has been
evolving faster than ever before.
 Schools and teachers are left trying to figure
out what their role needs to be in the education
of their 21st centurt students.
 Globalization has opened up the world and
allowed people to connect in new exciting ways.
Society has changed. We need to prepare our
students to play their role in 21st century
society we are a part of.
The following can be considered when deciding how
education will look in our schools and classrooms
Instruction should be
student-centered
• Education is no longer about
listening to teacher talk and
absorbing the information. They
will not be able to call upon a
teacher for answers, so will need
to have 'learned how to learn' on
their own.
• Instead of
passively
receiving
information, the
students would
gather
information on
their own, under
the guidance of
their teacher.
• They engage in many different types
of hands-on activities, as well as
demonstrate learning in many different
ways. Learning is about discovery, not
memorization of facts.
Education should
be collaborative  Students should be encouraged to work
together to discover information, piece it
together, and construct meaning.
 Collaboration should also be dynamic.
Students should learn how to recognize
the different strengths and talents each
person can bring to a project and
change roles fepending on those
attributes.
 Schools should also be collaborating
with other educational institutions atound
the world to share information and learn
about different practices or methods that
have been developed
The Role of Technology
in 21st Century Learning
1. Technology allows 24/7
access of information.
2. Constant social
interaction, and
3. easily created and
shared digital content.
There is a call for action to integrate technology as a
fundamental building block into education in three (3)
broad areas:
1. Use technology comprehensively to develop proficiency in 21st century skills.
- Even if all students mastered core academic subjects, they still would be woefully underprepared to
succeed in postsecondary institutions and workplaces, which increasingly value people who can use their
knowledge to communicate, collaborate, analyze, create innovate and solve problems.
2. Use technology comprehensively to support innovative teaching and learning.
- Technology supports new, research-based approaches and promising practices in teaching learning.
- schools need to offer more rigorous, relevant and engaging opportunitiesfor students to learn- and to apply
their knowledge and skills in meaningful ways.
3. Use technology comprehensively to create robust education support systems.
- Technology transforms standard and assessments, curriculum and instruction, professional development,
learning environments, and administration.
Important functions of Educational Technology
1. Improvement of Teaching
- Education Technology analyses the process of teaching thoroughly.
It tries to find out the different variables of teaching their interlinks,
effects upon each other, relationships, theories of teaching , phases
of teaching principles of teaching, maxims of teaching etc. By
developing the theories of teaching, it helps in improving the quality
of education.
2. Analysis of the Teaching - Learning Process
- It tries to establish better relationship between teaching and
learning.
3. Improvement Learning
- It facilitates more and more of learning in less time. It takes the help
of various empirically established generalizations from psychology,
sociology, physical sciences, engineering etc.
3. Enhancing Goals
of Education
- The objectives of
education are being
revised and revised with
the passage of time.
Educational Technology
helps in enhancing the
right objectives in the light
of the change
circumstances and
changed environment.
5.Training To Teachers
- Right type of training to the teachers is the need of
the hour.
- Educational Technology can render its valuable help
in training of teachers also.
6. Development of Curriculum
- Curriculum is the total teaching- learning
environment, which has to be modified and remodeled
in the light of latest thoughts.
- Educational Technology can do this jobof developing
a suitable curriculum appropriately.
7. Development of Teaching-Learning Materials
- they have to be in accordance with the environment of the
learners.
- Only right type of materials will able to modify the behavior of
the learner suitably making him fit person for the society.
8. Teaching-Learning Strategies
- The strategy must be the right one., which
would be according to the materials and is
able to bring out effective teaching learning.
- The knowledge of those strategies is a must
for every teacher.
9. Development of Audio-
Visual Aids:
- The software aids, the computer and
other such appliances, equipment
etc., have “to be used in the present
type of teaching-learning
environment. Computer assisted
instructions will help the learners as
well as the teacher to achieve the
goals of education more conveniently.
10. Help in Overall Improvement:
- Educational Technology helps in locating the problems in the
different areas of education.
- It also helps in remedying the draw-backs.
11. Identification of Needs of the
Community
- It helps in providing equal education opportunities to
backward people, disadvantage students and deprived
sections of the society.
- Educational Technology aims at Identifying the needs of
the community from time to time.
- Then it tries to improve the community in every possible
way.
