2. Mental health in nursing was one of the most eye opener experiences in my nursing career as
of yet. I never knew how much mental health goes into nursing and how much people avoid
taking care of the mentally ill. It is a stressful part of nursing because it involves much more than
monitoring and medication administration Mental health has taught me how to be more caring to
my patients and no matter what they are facing, they are no more human than you or I. Mental
health needs to be addressed more because people usually assume mental health as crazy or
senile only, but it is not. It is a category much more than crazy. Depression which I am sure
everyone has gone through is a mental disorder and it can be addressed with care, people just
intend on ignoring it for no reason other than they hate the sight of paranoia or suicidal thoughts.
Mental health in nursing has taught me to be more vigilant and to understand that these are
people who want to change their lives and need the help because no other person would dare
want to help them. Schizophrenia is more common than I had imagined and it saddens me that
people ignore it completely. I enjoy helping people, even those that do not acknowledge I am
helping them because I know deep down they are happy to see someone cares, but it is hard for
them to express it. Mental health has taught me so much and I will always remember the
opportunity I was given, to physically see these disorders through textbook and be able to
interact with them, have them share me their stories on how they struggled with their disorder It
is something I will never forget. It is something I will always carry on through the nursing
program and beyond that. Listening to their stories I know these are not actors, these are real
people who have dealt with this and know what they are doing. They all want help and go as far
as trying to tell me how badly they want to change. The staff trying to keep them all calm must
be exhausting and to prevent them from hurting themselves and others must be troublesome, but
3. I know deep down the staff cares about them just as much as I do. They are human with human
emotions. Thank you mental health for teaching me compassion.
