Advertising Student Presents Poster that
Advocates Spelmanites to Pursue Their Passion
Atlanta (April 8, 2008) the advertising and Copywriting Course at Spelman College
announces the release of their posters. Spelman Scholars were urged by their Professor
Dr. Margaret Price from the beginning to conceptualize an advertisement that would
"provide an alternative to the stereotypical images of 'womanhood' so often displayed in
mainstream advertising." It is with this notion in mind that they would produce a poster
exploring the issue of womanhood in the Spelman Community.
Stacy Marks, an English major, chose to project the need to understand and embrace
womanhood through affirming a sense of self. She hopes to create a platform for social
discourse through urging others to apply two main principles: "Step into your success"
and "Pursue your passion." The viewer should leave empowered to seek and find their
source of passion, not their grandmother's, mother's or any other influential women in
their life.
This poster will prompt students to think twice about what they want out of life and
claiming the power to define oneself. That is the very essence of womanhood: walking in
confidence of who you are and what you want. Who's to know? Maybe one will find their
passion is similar to that of their grandmother and mother. One thing is sure, it will
compel everyone to question where their personal idea of womanhood comes from and
whether the notion transcend generations.
The presentation will take place on April 24, 2008. This aesthetic piece is projected to be
a hit in advocating a more assured way of wrestling with the idea of "womanhood" for
oneself.
