2. Why the Change
• Due to a Nation wide shortage in production
Epinephrine 1:10,000 pre – filled syringes are
unable to be restocked
• This is causing a change in how we are going
to refill this medication
• Effective Immediately we will be being re-
supplied with kits with ampules that we will
have to mix
3. Problems
• Please note: this medication is a cardiac arrest
medication, which means you will need to
ensure that someone is dedicated to
medication management, to mix the meds
and deliver at proper rates, as it has the
chance of slowing the rate of delivery of this
medication
6. Glass Ampules Require Filter Straws
• Each kit will have Glass
Ampules of 1:1,000 Epi
• Breaking of glass
medication Ampules,
require the use of Filter
Straws to ensure, glass
particles are not
injected.
9. Step 2
• Remove Filter Straw
from Package and
attach to Saline Flush
10. Step 3
• Eject 1 cc of saline,
leaving 9 cc’s in syringe
11. Step 4
• Ensure all medication is
in lower portion of glass
vial
• Then carefully break top
of ampule
• (if you need assistance
or would like to review
techniques, seek out
EMS team member)
12. Step 5
• Using the filter needed
• Draw up the 1cc of Epi
1:1,000 into your saline
flush
13. Congrats
• At this time you now
have 10cc’s of Epi
1:10,000
• This is the same
concentration and
amount as the pre-filled
version
• Administer to patient
following the 6 Rights
14. Dispose of Sharps
• Please dispose of all sharps
– This includes
• Glass vial (Both half's)
• Filter Straw
