3. What is the TL-9?
 TL-9 was designed for a quicker and safer way
when using the hydraulic spreaders to lift an object
 TL- 9 increases both contact surface area (the
ground) & lateral support in order to improve
overall stability to the hydraulic spreaders when
conducting a lift in this manner
 TL-9 is made from half inch solid steel, with a 6 x 6
base plate, and 4 1/2 inch gusseted towers
spaced approximately 2 inches apart

4. When to use the TL-9?
 When quick or rapid extrication of a person or part
of a person is trapped by an object, on a
moderately stable platform.
 Examples may include;
 Pedestrian trapped under a motor vehicle, with the vehicle
is on asphalt, crushed stone, non-saturated grass or earth
 Industrial equipment accident
 A FF trapped by an object in a MAYDAY/RIT scenario
 Extremity trapped under an object

5. When NOT to use the TL-9?
 When the object is NOT resting on moderately
stable platform
 When the object resting on multiple planes
(example may be a car on embankment)
• Where rapid extrication is not necessary
(scene is safe, all patients that are trapped are stable)
• When you need to lift the object more than the
hydraulic spreader arm travel
• To create a space to begin patient
care

7. Recommendations and Key
Considerations for the TL-9
 While using the TL-9, it is upmost important to use proper
cribbing and stabilization techniques and must be adhered to
at all times
 TL-9 maximizes the stability of the hydraulic
spreader/combination tool not the object being lifted when
rapid-x is deemed appropriate
 Remember “Quick Grab” and “Rapid Extrication” still takes
coordination
 TL-9 should not be used to create a space for patient care to
begin; lift “just enough” to get the patient to the “cold zone”
 Minimum PPE should consist of helmet, turnout coat, pants,
and gloves (or approved NFPA extrication gloves), and eye
protection
 The first time use should be in practice NOT an actual
emergency event

8. Where will the TL-9 be stored?
 The TL-9 will be stored on the ladder, E1, and E2
 They will be placed in the same cabinet of the
hydraulic tools respective to the apparatus
 E1’s and E2’s TL-9 are interchangeable.
 The Ladder’s TL-9 is ONLY FOR the combination
tool and cannot be used the hydraulic tools on E1
or E2
