◦ A software is a Collection of programs that helps one communicate with the hardware of the computer.
◦ There are different types computer software which are useful for several purposes.

3. 1) System Software
◦ System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs.
◦ System software is used to manage the computer itself.
◦ It runs in the background, maintaining the computer's basic functions
◦ Essentially, system software provides a platform for application software to be run on top of it.
◦ System software must be as efficient as possible to provide an effective platform for higher-level software in the computer
system.
◦ System software must be written in a computer language the central processing unit (CPU) and other computer hardware can
read.
◦ It connects directly to the hardware that enables the computer to run.

4. 2) Application Software
◦ Application software, or simply applications, are often called productivity programs or end-user programs
because they enable the user to complete tasks.
◦ Application software is specific to the task it is designed for and can be as simple as a calculator application
or as complex as a word processing application.
◦ Applications may be bundled with the computer and its system software or published separately and may
be coded as proprietary, open-source, or projects.
◦ Some application packages focus on a single task, such as word processing; others called integrated
software include several applications.

5. 3) Programming Software
◦ Programming software is a software which helps the programmer in developing other software.
◦ Programming software is also known as programming tool or software development tool.
◦ Programming software is a sub-category of system software but according to some sources it is stated as
a separate category of software along with application and system software.
◦ Programming software is a program or set of programs which helps the software, such as C, C++, R etc..

 An Operating System (OS) is a software that acts as an interface between computer hardware
components and the user.
