Practical Research Methods
Prepared by: Kruy Sangea

Mr. Tuy Kol
In the subject of “PracticalResearchMethods”, it is an important course
that the university students of major teaching English have to study. Because they
need to do the research before they graduate from the university. These subject
guides for people wish to conductresearch. It is aimed at those new to research and
assumes no prior knowledge of the issues covered. It will also interest in finding
out more about other research methods that are available to them. Forthe purpose
of this course, research is defined as the deliberate study of other students for the
purposes ofincreasing understanding and adding to knowledge. As a researcher,
you might be interested in attitudes and behavior. As I am a university student at
Build Bright in year 4, semester 1, I had learnt this subject, “PracticalResearch
Methods”and i gained more knowledge in this coursein how to conductresearch.
Therefore, I briefly mentioned each of chapter in this course that I have understood
after I learnt or already studied.
For the first unit, is about how to define the project, yes, what I catch up
with this unit is that about how to start to think about the research, I need to ask
myself a few questions before I start to do it such as: Why have i decided to do the
research? How can i remain interested in my research? Or what skills and
experience do i have which might help in my research? Once i have to think about
these five ‘WS’ (what, why, when, where, who). And trying to sum up my
proposedproject in one sentence, when i have done this, take it to several people,
including my boss ortutor, and ask them if it makes sense. Do they understand
what my research is about? If they don’t, ask them to explain their confusion,
revise my statement and take it back to them. So I must take time to think about
my research as this will save me problems later. After that is about how to decide
upon a methodology and use method to collect the data. There are qualitative and
quantitative research, I have to decide which one is best for me or both of them.
Another way I had learnt how to choosemy research methods and how to
conductbackground research. These are almost important for the researchers
because it presented about the research methods are the tools that are used to
gather data. The thing is to use the method in social research and there are three
types of interview like unstructured, semi-structured, and structured interviews.
Interviews can be conducted face-to-face or over the telephone. It also has focus
groups that are held with a number of people to obtain a group opinion, is run by
moderator who asks questions and makes sure the discussiondoes not digress. One
more thing is about questionnaires; think of questionnaires that it might be used to
find out the information from the interviewees.
In addition, the research project needs to think about how I am going to
choosemy participants. I have to decide what type of people I need to contact.
There will be only a small number of people within the research population, in
which case it might be possible to contacteveryone. There are many different ways
to choosea sample, and the method used will depend upon the area of research,
research methodology and preference of the researcher. Basically there are two
main types of sample: probability and purposive samples. These types of sample
are used if the researcher wishes to explain, predict or generalize to the whole
research population. It is possible to use a mixture of sampling techniques within
one project which may help to overcome some of the disadvantages found within
different procedures.
For most types of research I will need to producea research proposal, as it
helps me to focus on the ideas and provides a useful document for me to reference
but I should follow to a specific format. Research proposals stand a better chance
of being accepted if I am able to prove that I have the required knowledge or
experience to carry out the research effectively. It is important to make sure that
my proposed methods will address the problem I have identified and that I am able
to display an understanding of these methods. On the other hand, I most
remembered is about how to conductinterviews. Of course, this is a very important
in the research project on the way to use the equipment for recording when we
interview the participants and make sure that it is easy to get all the information
from interviewees. Sometime it is better taking-notes that might find it useful to jot
down pertinent points. Specially, treating interviewees with respect, arrive on time,
think about the appearance and the expectations of the person we’re about to
interview, think about bodylanguage, and during the interview, firm eye contact
with little movement indicates that we’re interested in what is being said. When we
get strong information for our research project we need to analyses the data. The
methods that use to analyse the data will depend on whether we have chosen to
conductqualitative or quantitative research. This might be a transcript from an
interview or focus group, a series of written answers on an open-ended
questionnaire, or field notes or memos written by the researcher. And the last one
we have to report our findings. There are three main ways of reporting our findings
such as written reports, journal articles, and oral presentations.
As a result, at the end of the course I get much more experience about how
to do the research project in appropriate way. I have participated in a small group
and gain more knowledge from their ideas. Especially, in group interview had
provide a real practicing, on how to collect the data from them and/or from internet
search, and the right references to the sources. Moreover, the lecturer provided a
lot of knowledge on this subject on how to conductthe research and has clear
explanation for me and also other students. Therefore, I am pleasure for that and I
hope that I will success in this subject to continue till I graduate.
