The 115th Alden Kindred of America Reunion and Annual Meeting was held on August 1, 2015. Members were registered
and refreshments served to begin this beautiful day. The weather was warm and sunny which was a perfect setting for
members to socialize before the meeting began.
President Pauline Kezer called the meeting to order at 11:07 am. Chaplin Barbara Itz offered the invocation and Lily
Campbell, granddaughter of board member Gary Campbell, led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Before a motion was made to accept the minutes of the 114th Annual Meeting, Mrs. George Bingham asked for a correc-
tion to her late husband’s middle name from Walker to Walter. The late George Walter Chandler Bingham was a past
officer and board member of the Alden Kindred of America. The correction was made.
A motion was made and 2nd to accept the minutes. The minutes of the 114th Annual Meeting were accepted unani-
mously by the members present.
J. Alden Keyser presented the report of the Finance Committee. He reviewed the financial statement and the main areas
of financial increase this past year. These included personnel, genealogy and the Speak for Thyself annual event. Invest-
ments have been on the upswing due to the strength in the stock market and our donors’generosity. Alden reported that
the Kindred continues to be financially stable and thanked all members for their support. (refer to financial report 6/15).
A motion was made and 2nd to accept this report. The Financial Report was accepted unanimously by the members
present.
Pauline Kezer introduced John Bradford Towle , Nominating Committee member, who reviewed the slate of officers for
the Board of Directors, Members at Large and the Advisory Board. (refer to nominating report 8/15)
Pauline made a motion to accept this slate as nominated at this 115th Annual Meeting. The motion was 2nd , and the
slate was accepted unanimously by all members present.
Pauline introduced Board Members who were present at this Annual Meeting and welcomed new Board Members, Jeff
Dowling, Duxbury, Massachusetts and Adryn Sumner, South Carolina. Jeff was present at today’s meeting. Adryn was
unable to attend due to her husband’s recent injury.
Linda Osborne, Chairperson of the Education Committee, presented her report. Linda discussed the AKA scholarships
and the continuing need to attract applicants for the $1000 scholarship. The requirements in place at the present time
are: 1. Alden lineage; 2. Member by 9/15: and 3. Written statement “What it means to be an Alden” due by 3/16. The
recipient will be announced 5/16.
The recipient of the Dr. Donnell B. Young Scholarship for 2015 was Nelia Elinore Hogan of Medfield Ma.
Linda presented the recipient, Nelia Hogan, and she thanked the members. Nelia will attend Loyola University.
Chandley Mackenzie, a Duxbury High School senior and previous intern at AKA, received the John And Priscilla Alden
Scholarship.
Matt Vigneau, Director of AKA, additionally received a scholarship to further his education toward his Master’s Degree.
A motion was made and 2nd to accept the Education Report. The motion was carried unanimously by all members present.
Alicia Crane Williams and J. Alden Keyser presented the report on Membership and the change in bylaws. (refer to the
Report of the Bylaws Committtee, 8/15)
115th Meeting Minutes
Alicia emphasized the need to increase membership as well as to address the loss of members due
to attrition. There is a need to clarify membership categories, and the bylaws need to be changed
to address this issue. AKA needs to attract more members. The change in bylaw will address this.
Anyone can be a member of the AKA upon paying dues which would be $30 individual and $55 for
family. Certified lineage members would pay an increased amount to research their family history.
There are 3 categories of membership: 1. Annual Member 2. Life Member
3. Honorary Member (which is awarded).
A Certified Alden Lineage Descendant is a member who files documented lineage from John and
Priscilla Alden that is approved by the Alden Kindred Genealogist.
A motion was made by Linda Osborne to ratify these changes to the bylaws regarding member-
ship. The motion was 2nd by Alden Porter. The members present passed this motion unanimously.
The amendments to the bylaws were ratified at this 115th Annual Meeting.
Pauline Kezer reiterated that the Alden Homestead is now a National Historic Landmark and that
any person can be a member, despite lineage qualifications.
The Genealogy Report was presented by Alden Kindred Genealogist, Lilly Cleveland. Lilly reported
that the Alden family tree has been placed on Ancestry’s Roots Web which is user friendly and a
positive change. Technology is changing and social media is being explored. Facebook has been
a positive way to involve the younger generation. Lilly reported there is a need for a high speed
scanner for documents, and a need to get a college intern to assist with processing/scanning these
documents. Lilly thanked Bonnie Conant for all her ongoing help with documentation assistance ,
and Alicia Crane Williams for her help and expertise in the important areas of genealogy. A motion
was made and 2nd to accept this Genealogy Report. The Report was accepted unanimously by
all members present.
Alicia Crane Williams expressed the need to increase funding for the work of the AKA genealogists.
Alicia reiterated the need to fund the work to expand membership and improve the lineage system.
She donated $5000 for this mission and challenged all AKA members to meet this challenge. This
was gratefully received by the membership present.
Kristen Larson, Manager of Membership and Development, was introduced by Pauline Kezer. Kristen
was hired 2/15 for this position. She related that she is an Alden descendant of Ruth. Kristen
discussed the need to increase connections and expand visibility. She passed to the membership
tables a packet to further explain the focus of her present work for the Alden Kindred. It included
the areas of Development; Preservation; and Donations. Pauline thanked Kristen for her work and
contributions to management. Pauline also thanked Kristen for all her help and her involvement
in the Speak For Thyself Event this past May.
Pauline introduced Matt Vigneau, the Director of the Alden Kindred of America.
Matt related that the ongoing thrust remains to be growth of the organization and the continuing
need to increase membership. The 20/20 celebration to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the
arrival of the Mayflower in Plymouth will occur in the year 2020. This will be a big event that the
AKA is preparing for and will require a huge effort on everyone’s part.
Matt talked about the new sign and logo that greets all visitors at the entrance of the Alden property.
He thanked the John Williamson Trust for helping with this project.
Matt invited everyone to visit the new gift shop that has been revamped - and made more inviting
to visitors of the Alden property.
Matt thanked Kristen Larson for her work in her new position. He introduced Bonnie Conant to
explain the raffle at this Annual Meeting to all who would like to participate.

Following this, the Alden Descendants roll call took place:
Elizabeth: 15
Joseph: 8
Jonathan: 6
Sarah: 5
Ruth: 14
David: 1
States represented: Connecticut: 8 Florida: 4 Georgia: 2 Kansas: 2 Massachusetts: 25 Michigan: 2

Matt then introduced Janet LaBerge, past Speak for Thyself recipient and owner of Dirty Deeds Done
Dirt Cheap and the Good Deeds Thrift Shop. Janet had a day at her shop on 7/15 for collections
which she donated to the Alden Kindred of America today. The total of her donation was $1000
and was gratefully received. Pauline discussed Janet’s other business, Dirty Deeds Done Cheap. This
provides clean out help for many people with valued items being re-circulated to those in need.
Pauline Kezer, President of AKA, spoke of honor she felt to be in this position. She discussed the
retreat held at the Episcopal Convent in Duxbury, Ma. in September 2014. This was a valued experi-
ence to develop a strategic plan and a mission statement for the Alden Kindred of America.
Pauline discussed core areas that are relevant to the AKA in moving forward. These included:
strengthening monetary resources; increasing membership; governing strategically; increasing
communication; providing staff; increasing volunteers.
There was a review of this year’s Speak for Thyself Event. It was held at a new venue this year on
Duxbury Bay. It was a very successful, enjoyable event for everyone that attended.
Also discussed was the Preservation Grant for $7000 to evaluate the structure of the Alden House.
It was reported that some work needs to be done to windows and sills, but the house is generally
in good condition. Pauline praised the new sign and logo on the Alden Property and its necessity
to encourage new visitors.
Pauline presented news and information to the members about the property adjacent to the Alden
Property. This originally belonged to the Aldens in 1627 and is presently up for sale. The asking
price is $700,000. It includes 2 houses and 2.7 acres of land. This was a missed opportunity 15
years ago to purchase this property.
Mrs. Bingham, widow of the late George Bingham, immediately donated $5000 and called this
a‘no brainer’ - and offered a challenge. If others will donate a total of $50,000, she would donate
another $5000. Alden Keyser donated $5000. By days end, $15,000 had already been donated.
Pauline asked to adjourn the 115th meeting of the Alden Kindred of America.
Alden Porter made a motion to adjourn. Kristen Larson 2nd the motion. All members in attendance
unanimously moved to adjourn the meeting at 12:32 pm.

Director’s Message
It is both an honor and a privilege to be the Director of the Alden Kindred of America. Since
joining the organization six months ago I have been struck not only by the historical value
of the Alden home – it truly is one of America’s great treasures – but also by the strong sense
of family shared with me by Alden relations near and far.
Fiscal year 2015/2016 saw enormous
transition for the organization with the
implementation of decisions made as
part of the Strategic Plan. In addition,
the purchase of the 97 Alden Street
property has opened new opportunities
for site expansion, expanded program-
ming and educational outreach. Our
new caretaker, David McCormick, has
applied his landscaping talents to clear
brush from the grounds, which now have
a spacious, open, and airy feel where the
two properties meet.
Under Kristen Larson’s guidance as the
Development and Membership Manager,
membership is up dramatically. Since
adopting the by-law changes that opened
membership to all and initiating the
membership campaign last year, we’ve
added over 290 new members, a 15
percent increase. Lineage applications
have also increased significantly and Staff
Genealogist, Lilly Cleveland, has been very
busy keeping up with the documentation
demands.
Another change that you will notice over
the coming year is the completion of the
migration of our membership records to
Past Perfect, a museum contact manage-
ment software, and the integration of our
processes with our back-office accounting,
thanks to bookkeeper Carol Smith. Bonnie
Conant did a terrific job of maintaining
the membership database and this new
system gives us the ability to link all of our
museum data needs, from membership
and donations to collections and volunteer
management and better connect with
our members.
The 240th anniversary of American Independ-
ence provided an opportunity to spotlight a
different generation of Aldens. Sponsored
by the Massachusetts Society of the
Cincinnati, Revolutionary War reenac-
tors helped present “Liberty Pole Day,”
transporting visitors back to the nation’s
beginnings and into the Alden House
story with living history demonstrations
and fife and drum music. The program
also capped a week of tours by local fifth
graders as they explored how that war
touched their community.
Visitors from around the world continue to
make their way to Alden House seeking to
explore family roots and connect with the
Pilgrim story. Their motivations underscore
what DanielWebster once said: “There is sort
of genius of the place, which inspires and awes
us…we feel we are on the spot where…our
history was laid.”
Looking forward, AKA is an active participant
in the Duxbury’s 2020 Committee, preparing
the town for anticipated interest in the 400th
anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival in Massa-
chusetts. We are in the planning stages for
an orientation film, developing educational
outreach opportunities to engage the local
community, and collaborating with the
University of Massachusetts archaeologists
to reexamine artifacts from the 1960 dig at
the“first site.”
Thank you for your support and your kind
welcome.

In August 2015 we gathered beneath a tent at our National Historic Landmark, Alden House Historic Site, for the 115th An-
nual Meeting with over 100 of our members and supporters. Strategic By-Law changes topped the agenda which opened
our membership to any person supporting the Kindred mission in preservation, education and exhibition of Alden his-
tory and heritage. We announced membership incentives for lineage members to waive genealogical fees for close family
relatives not yet in the Kindred, thanks to the generosity of former Board member Alicia Crane Williams whose donation of
$5,000 defrayed administrative expenses. New Board Members and Officers were elected and we reviewed a Strategic Plan
that would place us in a strong position to be a key player, especially in Duxbury, in the 2020 National Commemoration of
the Landing of the Mayflower. A spirited discussion surrounding the possible acquisition of abutting 97 Alden Street, a par-
cel of land that would restore a 2.7 acre portion of the original 1627 land grant given to John & Priscilla Mullins Alden.

Well, it’s been quite a year! On October 30, 2015 the Alden Kindred of America purchased 97 Alden Street. The Kindred
raised roughly 50% of the down payment in new dollars, with full Board support and participation. The two dwellings on
that property were updated and promptly rented. As it would turn out, the tenant occupying the farmhouse also owns
and runs a management business focusing on cleaning and landscaping and we became their first Duxbury client. Our
grounds are now regularly maintained. Our buildings and Alden House are cleaned daily during the summer and any
small repairs, snow plowing, and clearing of brush between our properties are all handled by them.
Bill Thayer, the architect of the Alden Barn has been energized by our acquisition of property and our preservation efforts
in the Alden House. He has jumped in to assist with the integration of our land assets and has developed“Alden Possibili-
ties”for future use of our properties. We are so fortunate that all these good people are helping us at this time.
As we charted a new course, our previous director left, and a search committee, ably led by Peg Baker found us De-
siree Mobed, our new director, who came on board in February. Desiree brings years of experience and leadership in
the historical non-profit world and we are so lucky to have her on hand. She joins Kristen Larson, our Membership and
Development Manager, and Lilly Cleveland, our Genealogist who has had a busy and extraordinary year. Carol Smith
literally found us when she recently moved to the area and joined the Duxbury Rug Hookers who meet upstairs in the
Alden Barn. Carol popped into the office just as the director had left and said,“Do you need any help?” We said,“Can you
do QuickBooks?” Carol said“yes”and she was added to our talented staff. Carol’s husband is a minister who answered the
call to serve a local church, so we like to think that it was“divine intervention”that sent Carol our way. Kim Martin, our
accountant, is another essential ingredient!
This year, we have had the largest membership growth in decades due to the incentives listed above and the fact that
now any person who shares our mission can become a Kindred Member. Those members who would like to certify their
lineage may do so through our genealogy staff, but it is no longer a prerequisite for membership.
The Alden Kindred became an Organizational Founding Non-Profit Partner with Plymouth 400, charged with the running
of the 2020 commemoration. A Duxbury400 Committee was formed and our Director currently sits on that board.
Our education programs had a banner year. Trish Birk-Smith, our lead docent and educator, led and instituted a rigorous
high school internship program, the fruits of student research and exhibits are on display in the Alden Barn for the 2016
season. We extended our Third Grade program to area schools and developed a fifth grade program focusing on Alden’s
and the American Revolution. We are actively seeking funding to expand our education programs onsite and online
further this coming year.
The 10th Annual Speak for Thyself Award Dinner was a great success and it was our pleasure to evangelize the missions
and life work of: courtroom illustrator Jane Collins, food redistribution advocate Ashley Stanley of Lovin’Spoonfuls and
nuclear safety advocate Mary“Pixie”Lampert, additionally recognizing Cameron Schiller, a Duxbury High School senior
who at an early age has demonstrated exceptional leadership and community commitment with an“Aspiring Priscilla”
award.
Museum season kicked off in June with a Liberty Day Festival that celebrated the Alden’s and the Revolutionary War and,
specifically, events that took place right here in our house 240 years ago! Complete with a Fife and Drum Corp, re-enac-
tors engaged throngs of visitors and enthusiasts. Continuing this tradition of celebrating 4 centuries of Duxbury and the
Alden Family we have begun to create a short film to be used to enhance one’s visit to our National Historic Landmark.
Stay tuned!
I want to thank the Board, Committee Members, Docents, Generous Donors, Volunteers, our Kindred Members and espe-
cially our Staff for guiding us through a year of changes and a year of promise. We are on the right track and will be focus-
ing our attention on further membership growth, sustained financial stability, and fitting our two properties together to
improve the experience of“Bringing History to Life at the Alden House Historic Site.”

to Life at the Alden House abounds. She descends from the line of John.
Desiree Mobed
Executive Director
Desiree joins the Kindred from Harwich Historic Society, and since her arrival this year, has been
instrumental in addressing critical organization infrastructure considerations. Upgrading our
membership database and establishing the means to manage our growing membership and
collections has ensured that 2016 will be one of the most productive yet in harnessing the
information that is uniquely ours. Going forward, she is looking forward to developing programs
onsite and online that engage audiences dynamically. Desiree and her husband Jeffrey reside
in Sandwich, on Cape Cod and have two sons. David is a Naval officer serving aboard the USS
Mason; Nathan will be attending Auburn University in the fall.

and online, improving upon the communications, outreach and ability to generate resources
vital to our programs, present and planned, through our events, grants and solicitations. With
her attention to the nuances of our membership and organizational objectives, she has been
an integral part of the momentum behind the imperative “Bringing History to Life.” She and
her four children descend from the line of Ruth, and reside in Duxbury, MA.

Friends,
Cousins,
Members,
This year has been a whirlwind of expansive visibility and
abundant support both in our local and national communities but
also our virtual one. Striving to provide the value in membership
means finding creative ways to engage new audiences.
We bring Alden history and heritage to life, highlighting
the constancy of the homestead and the Alden family through
the centuries. Those who venture here learn of the fortitude and
fearlessness of John and Priscilla and also learn of their legacy:
presidents and leaders, pioneers in aerospace, notable authors, and
those who seek to connect with and support this place. The sense of
place is known here in the very place where history happened. Our
stewardship to that legacy leads us in mission to preserve, educate
and exhibit the unique Alden artifacts and share their story.
The words of life member Mark Baird are still impressed upon
me,“Being an Alden makes me feel like I am an active participant in
this great American adventure rather than a casual observer.” We rely
upon the generosity of every one of our relationships with members,
friends, and benefactors to accomplish great things, in much the
same way that a body has many useful parts which together comprise
a whole, we the staff, board, volunteers and donors together with
our membership, comprise a powerful team that is effecting the
exact type of attention every historic home could possibly dream
of: the visitors and enthusiasts, and most of all, the children. In a
time when many places are struggling, Alden House Historic Site
and Alden Kindred of America are thriving. Whether by birth or by
boat, we are all here now, thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Respectfully Submitted,

Finance Report
FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
This Report is to be read in conjunction with the attached Financial Statements dated 6/30/2016.
Statement of Activities:
1. Revenues:
Total Revenues are $241,155(including $40,712 of Investment returns) vs. $140,337(including $22,333 of
Investment Returns) in the prior year. The anticipated (budgeted) transfer from Endowment was not done due to
having sufficient cash on hand to cover our activities without needing the transfer. Monies from the Endowment
fund were, however, used to cover costs to purchase the 97 Alden Street property that were not financed by the
loan from Rockland Trust. All categories of Revenue showed an increase over the prior year!
2. Expenses:
Expenses exceeded the prior year by $33k. About $23k of this was payroll (anticipated in the budget), and $6k
for increased event expenses. (Events still netted an overall profit).
3. Statement of Position:
Our Cash position is lower than last year but still in good shape. Investments have been on the upswing due to
the recent strength in the stock market and our donors’ generosity. However, the Fund is lower than last year due
to the withdrawal for 97 Alden costs. The total owed to Rockland Trust on our mortgage at 06/30 is $473,977.
The loan was for $480,000 and is a 5year term loan. Monthly P&I payments are $2,752.
Conclusion:
All in all, the Kindred continues to be financially stable and our thanks goes out for your support. This enables
us to continue do the work that benefits our constituencies: This being:
	 -Our educational and Community outreach,
-Historic preservation projects-especially that big project on the property here-the museum,
-Genealogical assistance to our members and prospective members,
	 -Gur scholarship awards and
-The Speak for Yourself event that honors exceptional women in our Community.
Please give us your support so that our important initiatives can continue.
Respectfully for the Committee,
Alden Keyser

SPEAK report
The Alden Kindred held its 10th Annual Speak Awards Dinner in May honoring three
outstanding women. In celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Speak, we recognized
a young woman showing exceptional leadership in her early years. Our first“Aspiring
Priscilla”was Cameron Schiller, a graduating senior at Duxbury High School.
Jane Flavell Collins of Duxbury, renowned courtroom illustrator. From Whitey
Bulger to the Shoe Bomber and the Boston Marathon Bombers, her authentic
portrayals are recognized worldwide;
Mary “Pixie” Lampert also of Duxbury, formed the organization Pilgrim Watch.
Under her leadership Pilgrim Watch advocacy led to the 2019 decommissioning of
the Pilgrim Nuclear Plant in Plymouth, one of the most unsafe nuclear plants in the
country;
Ashley Stanley Brookline native and founder of Lovin’Spoonfuls”that has rescued
over 3.6 million pounds of fresh and healthy food and redistributed it to those in
need. Food recovery of just 15% can result in the feeding of 2 ½ million people, not
to mention the tremendous impact on waste disposal.
These awards honor the memory and steadfastness of Priscilla Mullins Alden, wife
of Pilgrim John Alden, who spoke up for herself in choosing John as her husband….
and the rest is history!!!
“
Archly the Maiden smiled, and, with
eyes overrunning with laughter,
Said in a tremulous voice,
“Why don’t you speak for thyself,
John?”

has a love of History and interned at the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society. She plans
to study history.
Please remember to have your children or grandchildren submit their applications for
our Dr. Young Scholarship by March 1. They must be a member of the Kindred by at least
September 1st of the previous year. Requirements may be checked out on our website at
www.alden.org.

Genealogy
Report
It is a very exciting year at the Alden Kindred with our lineage certification program.
The interest level is extremely high and people seem genuinely eager to prove their line to
Mayflower passengers John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. The homestead and property are
an added benefit as they can visit where their ancestors lived and worked on the original
1627 land grant, cellar hole and house.
The benefit of our membership drive last fall and the anticipation of Plymouth’s
2020 commemorations (just 3 short years away) have added to our applicant pool. The
interest in lineage societies right now is very strong and will continue. People want to know
who they are and from whence they came. It gives a great depth of feeling to visit your
ancestral home and to have documented your relationship to that family. It is extremely
meaningful.
We have many requests for lineage research as well. Some require extensive
documentation and it is very helpful to be able to guide them as to where to find every-
thing. It is not easy. The lucky few who have family as members have a distinct advantage.
All they need to do is connect themselves to that other member via vital records. This is
a great help to future generations, research efforts and lateral relatives. We have many
whose cousins or great aunts were members whose process is greatly streamlined.
Our Archives are a great benefit to applicants as we can look up generations
beyond the silver books series (Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Descend-
ants of John Alden, v 16, parts 1-5) and make connections. We can use the information
to make it possible for applicants to make the connections between parents and children
in subsequent generations. It will also serve as a resource for future generations.
There are many free resources people may use during their research process and
I am happy to guide them toward completing their files. The internet is a burgeoning
resource and family genealogy books beyond copyright are available if you know where
to look.
This year, I approved 154 certified lineage requests to join the Alden Kindred.
Our society maintains its unique and prestigious reputation. Furthermore, it is one of
the oldest lineage societies in the country and one of the few who maintain the original
homestead and land grant. I am also working with 106 prospective members who need
research assistance.
We are excited by the growth and interest in our lineage program. It is a pleasure
to serve the Alden Kindred of America, Inc.

Lilly Cleveland

  • 3. The 115th Alden Kindred of America Reunion and Annual Meeting was held on August 1, 2015. Members were registered and refreshments served to begin this beautiful day. The weather was warm and sunny which was a perfect setting for members to socialize before the meeting began. President Pauline Kezer called the meeting to order at 11:07 am. Chaplin Barbara Itz offered the invocation and Lily Campbell, granddaughter of board member Gary Campbell, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Before a motion was made to accept the minutes of the 114th Annual Meeting, Mrs. George Bingham asked for a correc- tion to her late husband’s middle name from Walker to Walter. The late George Walter Chandler Bingham was a past officer and board member of the Alden Kindred of America. The correction was made. A motion was made and 2nd to accept the minutes. The minutes of the 114th Annual Meeting were accepted unani- mously by the members present. J. Alden Keyser presented the report of the Finance Committee. He reviewed the financial statement and the main areas of financial increase this past year. These included personnel, genealogy and the Speak for Thyself annual event. Invest- ments have been on the upswing due to the strength in the stock market and our donors’generosity. Alden reported that the Kindred continues to be financially stable and thanked all members for their support. (refer to financial report 6/15). A motion was made and 2nd to accept this report. The Financial Report was accepted unanimously by the members present. (refer to nominating report 8/15) Pauline made a motion to accept this slate as nominated at this 115th Annual Meeting. The motion was 2nd , and the slate was accepted unanimously by all members present. Pauline introduced Board Members who were present at this Annual Meeting and welcomed new Board Members, Jeff Dowling, Duxbury, Massachusetts and Adryn Sumner, South Carolina. Jeff was present at today’s meeting. Adryn was unable to attend due to her husband’s recent injury. Linda Osborne, Chairperson of the Education Committee, presented her report. Linda discussed the AKA scholarships and the continuing need to attract applicants for the $1000 scholarship. The requirements in place at the present time are: 1. Alden lineage; 2. Member by 9/15: and 3. Written statement “What it means to be an Alden” due by 3/16. The recipient will be announced 5/16. The recipient of the Dr. Donnell B. Chandley Mackenzie, a Duxbury High School senior and previous intern at AKA, received the John And Priscilla Alden Scholarship. (refer to the Report of the Bylaws Committtee, 8/15) 115th Meeting Minutes
  • 4. Alicia emphasized the need to increase membership as well as to address the loss of members due to attrition. There is a need to clarify membership categories, and the bylaws need to be changed to address this issue. AKA needs to attract more members. The change in bylaw will address this. Anyone can be a member of the AKA upon paying dues which would be $30 individual and $55 for family. Certified lineage members would pay an increased amount to research their family history. There are 3 categories of membership: 1. Annual Member 2. Life Member 3. Honorary Member (which is awarded). A Certified Alden Lineage Descendant is a member who files documented lineage from John and Priscilla Alden that is approved by the Alden Kindred Genealogist. A motion was made by Linda Osborne to ratify these changes to the bylaws regarding member- ship. The motion was 2nd by Alden Porter. The members present passed this motion unanimously. The amendments to the bylaws were ratified at this 115th Annual Meeting. Pauline Kezer reiterated that the Alden Homestead is now a National Historic Landmark and that any person can be a member, despite lineage qualifications. The Genealogy Report was presented by Alden Kindred Genealogist, Lilly Cleveland. Lilly reported that the Alden family tree has been placed on Ancestry’s Roots Web which is user friendly and a positive change. Technology is changing and social media is being explored. Facebook has been a positive way to involve the younger generation. Lilly reported there is a need for a high speed scanner for documents, and a need to get a college intern to assist with processing/scanning these documents. Lilly thanked Bonnie Conant for all her ongoing help with documentation assistance , and Alicia Crane Williams for her help and expertise in the important areas of genealogy. A motion was made and 2nd to accept this Genealogy Report. The Report was accepted unanimously by all members present. Alicia Crane Williams expressed the need to increase funding for the work of the AKA genealogists. Alicia reiterated the need to fund the work to expand membership and improve the lineage system. She donated $5000 for this mission and challenged all AKA members to meet this challenge. This was gratefully received by the membership present. Kristen Larson, Manager of Membership and Development, was introduced by Pauline Kezer. Kristen was hired 2/15 for this position. She related that she is an Alden descendant of Ruth. Kristen discussed the need to increase connections and expand visibility. She passed to the membership tables a packet to further explain the focus of her present work for the Alden Kindred. It included the areas of Development; Preservation; and Donations. Pauline thanked Kristen for her work and contributions to management. Pauline also thanked Kristen for all her help and her involvement in the Speak For Thyself Event this past May. Pauline introduced Matt Vigneau, the Director of the Alden Kindred of America. Matt related that the ongoing thrust remains to be growth of the organization and the continuing need to increase membership. The 20/20 celebration to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower in Plymouth will occur in the year 2020. This will be a big event that the AKA is preparing for and will require a huge effort on everyone’s part. Matt talked about the new sign and logo that greets all visitors at the entrance of the Alden property. He thanked the John Williamson Trust for helping with this project. Matt invited everyone to visit the new gift shop that has been revamped - and made more inviting to visitors of the Alden property. Matt thanked Kristen Larson for her work in her new position. He introduced Bonnie Conant to explain the raffle at this Annual Meeting to all who would like to participate. 115thMeetingMinutes
  • 5. Following this, the Alden Descendants roll call took place: Elizabeth: 15 Joseph: 8 Jonathan: 6 Sarah: 5 Ruth: 14 David: 1 States represented: Connecticut: 8 Florida: 4 Georgia: 2 Kansas: 2 Massachusetts: 25 Michigan: 2 New Hampshire: 3 New Jersey: 2 New York: 4 Pennsylvania: 1 West Virginia: Eldest member in attendance: Barbara Dillon, 87 years old and Barbara Itz, 87 years old Youngest member in attendance: Churchill McCarthy, 7 years old Furthest travelor : John Adams, Kansas Matt then introduced Janet LaBerge, past Speak for Thyself recipient and owner of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and the Good Deeds Thrift Shop. Janet had a day at her shop on 7/15 for collections which she donated to the Alden Kindred of America today. The total of her donation was $1000 and was gratefully received. Pauline discussed Janet’s other business, Dirty Deeds Done Cheap. This provides clean out help for many people with valued items being re-circulated to those in need. Pauline Kezer, President of AKA, spoke of honor she felt to be in this position. She discussed the retreat held at the Episcopal Convent in Duxbury, Ma. in September 2014. This was a valued experi- ence to develop a strategic plan and a mission statement for the Alden Kindred of America. Pauline discussed core areas that are relevant to the AKA in moving forward. These included: strengthening monetary resources; increasing membership; governing strategically; increasing communication; providing staff; increasing volunteers. There was a review of this year’s Speak for Thyself Event. It was held at a new venue this year on Duxbury Bay. It was a very successful, enjoyable event for everyone that attended. Also discussed was the Preservation Grant for $7000 to evaluate the structure of the Alden House. It was reported that some work needs to be done to windows and sills, but the house is generally in good condition. Pauline praised the new sign and logo on the Alden Property and its necessity to encourage new visitors. Pauline presented news and information to the members about the property adjacent to the Alden Property. This originally belonged to the Aldens in 1627 and is presently up for sale. The asking price is $700,000. It includes 2 houses and 2.7 acres of land. This was a missed opportunity 15 years ago to purchase this property. Mrs. Bingham, widow of the late George Bingham, immediately donated $5000 and called this a‘no brainer’ - and offered a challenge. If others will donate a total of $50,000, she would donate another $5000. Alden Keyser donated $5000. By days end, $15,000 had already been donated. Pauline asked to adjourn the 115th meeting of the Alden Kindred of America. Alden Porter made a motion to adjourn. Kristen Larson 2nd the motion. All members in attendance unanimously moved to adjourn the meeting at 12:32 pm. Respectfully Submitted, Emily M. Zoltowski, Secretary 115thMeetingMinutes

  • 7. C O R P O R AT E A N N U A L R E P O R T | 7 Director’s Message It is both an honor and a privilege to be the Director of the Alden Kindred of America. Since joining the organization six months ago I have been struck not only by the historical value of the Alden home – it truly is one of America’s great treasures – but also by the strong sense of family shared with me by Alden relations near and far. Fiscal year 2015/2016 saw enormous transition for the organization with the implementation of decisions made as part of the Strategic Plan. In addition, the purchase of the 97 Alden Street property has opened new opportunities for site expansion, expanded program- ming and educational outreach. Our new caretaker, David McCormick, has applied his landscaping talents to clear brush from the grounds, which now have a spacious, open, and airy feel where the two properties meet. Under Kristen Larson’s guidance as the Development and Membership Manager, membership is up dramatically. Since adopting the by-law changes that opened membership to all and initiating the membership campaign last year, we’ve added over 290 new members, a 15 percent increase. Lineage applications have also increased significantly and Staff Genealogist, Lilly Cleveland, has been very busy keeping up with the documentation demands. Another change that you will notice over the coming year is the completion of the migration of our membership records to Past Perfect, a museum contact manage- ment software, and the integration of our processes with our back-office accounting, thanks to bookkeeper Carol Smith. Bonnie Conant did a terrific job of maintaining the membership database and this new system gives us the ability to link all of our museum data needs, from membership and donations to collections and volunteer management and better connect with our members. The 240th anniversary of American Independ- ence provided an opportunity to spotlight a different generation of Aldens. Sponsored by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati, Revolutionary War reenac- tors helped present “Liberty Pole Day,” transporting visitors back to the nation’s beginnings and into the Alden House story with living history demonstrations and fife and drum music. The program also capped a week of tours by local fifth graders as they explored how that war touched their community. Visitors from around the world continue to make their way to Alden House seeking to explore family roots and connect with the Pilgrim story. Their motivations underscore what DanielWebster once said: “There is sort of genius of the place, which inspires and awes us…we feel we are on the spot where…our history was laid.” Looking forward, AKA is an active participant in the Duxbury’s 2020 Committee, preparing the town for anticipated interest in the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival in Massa- chusetts. We are in the planning stages for an orientation film, developing educational outreach opportunities to engage the local community, and collaborating with the University of Massachusetts archaeologists to reexamine artifacts from the 1960 dig at the“first site.” Thank you for your support and your kind welcome. Respectfully submitted, Desiree E. Mobed
  • 8. Your President, Pauline Ryder Kezer 8 | C O R P O R AT E A N N U A L R E P O R T In August 2015 we gathered beneath a tent at our National Historic Landmark, Alden House Historic Site, for the 115th An- nual Meeting with over 100 of our members and supporters. Strategic By-Law changes topped the agenda which opened our membership to any person supporting the Kindred mission in preservation, education and exhibition of Alden his- tory and heritage. We announced membership incentives for lineage members to waive genealogical fees for close family relatives not yet in the Kindred, thanks to the generosity of former Board member Alicia Crane Williams whose donation of $5,000 defrayed administrative expenses. New Board Members and Officers were elected and we reviewed a Strategic Plan that would place us in a strong position to be a key player, especially in Duxbury, in the 2020 National Commemoration of the Landing of the Mayflower. A spirited discussion surrounding the possible acquisition of abutting 97 Alden Street, a par- cel of land that would restore a 2.7 acre portion of the original 1627 land grant given to John & Priscilla Mullins Alden. Dear Kindred Member, “Continuity gives us roots, change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.”
  • 9. C O R P O R AT E A N N U A L R E P O R T | 9 Well, it’s been quite a year! On October 30, 2015 the Alden Kindred of America purchased 97 Alden Street. The Kindred raised roughly 50% of the down payment in new dollars, with full Board support and participation. The two dwellings on that property were updated and promptly rented. As it would turn out, the tenant occupying the farmhouse also owns and runs a management business focusing on cleaning and landscaping and we became their first Duxbury client. Our grounds are now regularly maintained. Our buildings and Alden House are cleaned daily during the summer and any small repairs, snow plowing, and clearing of brush between our properties are all handled by them. Bill Thayer, the architect of the Alden Barn has been energized by our acquisition of property and our preservation efforts in the Alden House. He has jumped in to assist with the integration of our land assets and has developed“Alden Possibili- ties”for future use of our properties. We are so fortunate that all these good people are helping us at this time. As we charted a new course, our previous director left, and a search committee, ably led by Peg Baker found us De- siree Mobed, our new director, who came on board in February. Desiree brings years of experience and leadership in the historical non-profit world and we are so lucky to have her on hand. She joins Kristen Larson, our Membership and Development Manager, and Lilly Cleveland, our Genealogist who has had a busy and extraordinary year. Carol Smith literally found us when she recently moved to the area and joined the Duxbury Rug Hookers who meet upstairs in the Alden Barn. Carol popped into the office just as the director had left and said,“Do you need any help?” We said,“Can you do QuickBooks?” Carol said“yes”and she was added to our talented staff. Carol’s husband is a minister who answered the call to serve a local church, so we like to think that it was“divine intervention”that sent Carol our way. Kim Martin, our accountant, is another essential ingredient! This year, we have had the largest membership growth in decades due to the incentives listed above and the fact that now any person who shares our mission can become a Kindred Member. Those members who would like to certify their lineage may do so through our genealogy staff, but it is no longer a prerequisite for membership. The Alden Kindred became an Organizational Founding Non-Profit Partner with Plymouth 400, charged with the running of the 2020 commemoration. A Duxbury400 Committee was formed and our Director currently sits on that board. Our education programs had a banner year. Trish Birk-Smith, our lead docent and educator, led and instituted a rigorous high school internship program, the fruits of student research and exhibits are on display in the Alden Barn for the 2016 season. We extended our Third Grade program to area schools and developed a fifth grade program focusing on Alden’s and the American Revolution. We are actively seeking funding to expand our education programs onsite and online further this coming year. The 10th Annual Speak for Thyself Award Dinner was a great success and it was our pleasure to evangelize the missions and life work of: courtroom illustrator Jane Collins, food redistribution advocate Ashley Stanley of Lovin’Spoonfuls and nuclear safety advocate Mary“Pixie”Lampert, additionally recognizing Cameron Schiller, a Duxbury High School senior who at an early age has demonstrated exceptional leadership and community commitment with an“Aspiring Priscilla” award. Museum season kicked off in June with a Liberty Day Festival that celebrated the Alden’s and the Revolutionary War and, specifically, events that took place right here in our house 240 years ago! Complete with a Fife and Drum Corp, re-enac- tors engaged throngs of visitors and enthusiasts. Continuing this tradition of celebrating 4 centuries of Duxbury and the Alden Family we have begun to create a short film to be used to enhance one’s visit to our National Historic Landmark. Stay tuned! I want to thank the Board, Committee Members, Docents, Generous Donors, Volunteers, our Kindred Members and espe- cially our Staff for guiding us through a year of changes and a year of promise. We are on the right track and will be focus- ing our attention on further membership growth, sustained financial stability, and fitting our two properties together to improve the experience of“Bringing History to Life at the Alden House Historic Site.”
  • 10. 1 0 | C O R P O R AT E A N N U A L R E P O R T Pauline Kezer President, Board of Directors President of the Alden Kindred of America since 2014, Pauline Ryder Kezer lives in Old Saybrook, Connecticut and has served as Connecticut’s Secretary of State, and Member of the Legislature, former CEO of Hartford Ballet, President of Komen Foundation, and National Board of Girl Scouts of America. Five generations of her family have lived in the Alden House in Duxbury. Under her watchful leadership, membership is growing, the size of the property has doubled, the energy level of staff, Board members and volunteers is high, and broader interest in Bringing History to Life at the Alden House abounds. She descends from the line of John. Desiree Mobed Executive Director Desiree joins the Kindred from Harwich Historic Society, and since her arrival this year, has been instrumental in addressing critical organization infrastructure considerations. Upgrading our membership database and establishing the means to manage our growing membership and collections has ensured that 2016 will be one of the most productive yet in harnessing the information that is uniquely ours. Going forward, she is looking forward to developing programs onsite and online that engage audiences dynamically. Desiree and her husband Jeffrey reside in Sandwich, on Cape Cod and have two sons. David is a Naval officer serving aboard the USS Mason; Nathan will be attending Auburn University in the fall. Kristen Larson Development & Membership Manager Since joining the Kindred in 2015, Kristen has facilitated significant traction in the local community and online, improving upon the communications, outreach and ability to generate resources vital to our programs, present and planned, through our events, grants and solicitations. With her attention to the nuances of our membership and organizational objectives, she has been an integral part of the momentum behind the imperative “Bringing History to Life.” She and her four children descend from the line of Ruth, and reside in Duxbury, MA. Lilly Cleveland Genealogist Lilly Cleveland, Genealogist for the Alden Kindred of America, Inc., is a graduate of Boston University with a degree in American History and Certificate in Genealogical Research and descends from the line of daughter, Elizabeth. She and her family live in Norwell, and she is an active artist and historian, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), member of the Mayflower Society, SAR, and is a descendant of Salem witch trial victim John Proctor. She also serves on the Board of Directors for South Shore Art Center of Cohasset, and is a genealogist at www.yourfamilysearch.com. “Continuity gives us roots, change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.”
  • 11. C O R P O R AT E A N N U A L R E P O R T | 1 1 Friends, Cousins, Members, This year has been a whirlwind of expansive visibility and abundant support both in our local and national communities but also our virtual one. Striving to provide the value in membership means finding creative ways to engage new audiences. We bring Alden history and heritage to life, highlighting the constancy of the homestead and the Alden family through the centuries. Those who venture here learn of the fortitude and fearlessness of John and Priscilla and also learn of their legacy: presidents and leaders, pioneers in aerospace, notable authors, and those who seek to connect with and support this place. The sense of place is known here in the very place where history happened. Our stewardship to that legacy leads us in mission to preserve, educate and exhibit the unique Alden artifacts and share their story. The words of life member Mark Baird are still impressed upon me,“Being an Alden makes me feel like I am an active participant in this great American adventure rather than a casual observer.” We rely upon the generosity of every one of our relationships with members, friends, and benefactors to accomplish great things, in much the same way that a body has many useful parts which together comprise a whole, we the staff, board, volunteers and donors together with our membership, comprise a powerful team that is effecting the exact type of attention every historic home could possibly dream of: the visitors and enthusiasts, and most of all, the children. In a time when many places are struggling, Alden House Historic Site and Alden Kindred of America are thriving. Whether by birth or by boat, we are all here now, thank you for the opportunity to serve. Respectfully Submitted, Kristen Larson Manager, Development & Membership
  • 12. 1 2 | C O R P O R AT E A N N U A L R E P O R T Finance Report FINANCIAL STATEMENTS This Report is to be read in conjunction with the attached Financial Statements dated 6/30/2016. Statement of Activities: 1. Revenues: Total Revenues are $241,155(including $40,712 of Investment returns) vs. $140,337(including $22,333 of Investment Returns) in the prior year. The anticipated (budgeted) transfer from Endowment was not done due to having sufficient cash on hand to cover our activities without needing the transfer. Monies from the Endowment fund were, however, used to cover costs to purchase the 97 Alden Street property that were not financed by the loan from Rockland Trust. All categories of Revenue showed an increase over the prior year! 2. Expenses: Expenses exceeded the prior year by $33k. About $23k of this was payroll (anticipated in the budget), and $6k for increased event expenses. (Events still netted an overall profit). 3. Statement of Position: Our Cash position is lower than last year but still in good shape. Investments have been on the upswing due to the recent strength in the stock market and our donors’ generosity. However, the Fund is lower than last year due to the withdrawal for 97 Alden costs. The total owed to Rockland Trust on our mortgage at 06/30 is $473,977. The loan was for $480,000 and is a 5year term loan. Monthly P&I payments are $2,752. Conclusion: All in all, the Kindred continues to be financially stable and our thanks goes out for your support. This enables us to continue do the work that benefits our constituencies: This being: -Our educational and Community outreach, -Historic preservation projects-especially that big project on the property here-the museum, -Genealogical assistance to our members and prospective members, -Gur scholarship awards and -The Speak for Yourself event that honors exceptional women in our Community. Please give us your support so that our important initiatives can continue. Respectfully for the Committee, Alden Keyser

Food recovery of just 15% can result in the feeding of 2 ½ million people, not to mention the tremendous impact on waste disposal. These awards honor the memory and steadfastness of Priscilla Mullins Alden, wife of Pilgrim John Alden, who spoke up for herself in choosing John as her husband…. and the rest is history!!! “ Archly the Maiden smiled, and, with eyes overrunning with laughter, Said in a tremulous voice, “Why don’t you speak for thyself, John?” ” The Courtship of Myles Standish Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1858

  • 17. C O R P O R AT E A N N U A L R E P O R T | 1 7 Genealogy Report It is a very exciting year at the Alden Kindred with our lineage certification program. The interest level is extremely high and people seem genuinely eager to prove their line to Mayflower passengers John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. The homestead and property are an added benefit as they can visit where their ancestors lived and worked on the original 1627 land grant, cellar hole and house. The benefit of our membership drive last fall and the anticipation of Plymouth’s 2020 commemorations (just 3 short years away) have added to our applicant pool. The interest in lineage societies right now is very strong and will continue. People want to know who they are and from whence they came. It gives a great depth of feeling to visit your ancestral home and to have documented your relationship to that family. It is extremely meaningful. We have many requests for lineage research as well. Some require extensive documentation and it is very helpful to be able to guide them as to where to find every- thing. It is not easy. The lucky few who have family as members have a distinct advantage. All they need to do is connect themselves to that other member via vital records. This is a great help to future generations, research efforts and lateral relatives. We have many whose cousins or great aunts were members whose process is greatly streamlined. Our Archives are a great benefit to applicants as we can look up generations beyond the silver books series (Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Descend- ants of John Alden, v 16, parts 1-5) and make connections. We can use the information to make it possible for applicants to make the connections between parents and children in subsequent generations. It will also serve as a resource for future generations. There are many free resources people may use during their research process and I am happy to guide them toward completing their files. The internet is a burgeoning resource and family genealogy books beyond copyright are available if you know where to look. This year, I approved 154 certified lineage requests to join the Alden Kindred. Our society maintains its unique and prestigious reputation. Furthermore, it is one of the oldest lineage societies in the country and one of the few who maintain the original homestead and land grant. I am also working with 106 prospective members who need research assistance. We are excited by the growth and interest in our lineage program. It is a pleasure to serve the Alden Kindred of America, Inc. Respectfully submitted, Lilly Cleveland Genealogist
