3. The Vulture
Published by Chinua Achebe in 1971,
Vultures is a poem of four uneven stanzas, written
in free form.
It discusses the elements of love and evil in the
world, using a comparison of vultures with the
Commandant at Belsen Camp to highlight the link
between humans and nature.
4. Summary of the poem
The poem is roughly divided into four sections. The first of these
observes two vultures as they scavenge for food amongst human
remains before resting up with each other as mates. The second
section shows the rebellious nature of love and how love always will be
present. The third section follows the Commandant of Belsen as he
buys sweets for his beloved offspring. Both of these support the
observations in the final section which ruminates on how even in the
most evil person, love can take shape, whereas in every love there is
the smallest speck of evil.
5. Poem Concept Vulture and Belsen ( Human Being)
This first section of the poem
describes the vultures who have just
stuffed themselves
with the rotting meat of a carcass, and
are now sitting together on the
branches of a dead tree, leaning
affectionately towards each other as
they digest their huge meal. They
watch the remains of their meal
vigilantly so that no-one else steals
what left.
6. Bergen Belsen was one of the many notorious Nazi Concentration Camps.
Unlike the Death Camps such as Auschwitz it did not have gas chambers.
Instead prisoners were worked to death on a starvation diet. Conditions
were appalling and the cruelty was unspeakable.
Nazi Commandant Belsen
By the time the camp was
liberated by Allied troops
50,000 European citizens
had been killed within its
fences. Many of the dead
were piled into mass
graves; others were
incinerated in giant
crematoria. One its most
famous victims was the
diarist Anne Frank.

9. Clean And Health use of Vultures (Sardinia..)
Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is endemic in Sardinia and constitutes a serious
public health concern due to high prevalence in livestock and humans.
As sole obligate scavenger, griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) are uniquely
specialized to eliminate carcasses swiftly and efficiently, saving on
unnecessary environmental and economic costs for carrion disposal.
During the course of the project, vultures scavenged a total of 81,361 kg of
biomass, saving €90,041 in incineration costs and € 1,054 in CO2 emission.
Through extrapolation of these results, a total of 5,304 kg of suspected CE
infected sheep carcasses (65.3%) was calculated to have been disposed by
griffons, considerably reducing the CE risk and burden in Sardinia.
