MOBILE VIDEO IS THE FUTURE
GO NAIL IT
Editor's Notes
WORKED AS A SOCIAL MEDIA AND CONTENT CONSULTANT AT BIG AGENCIES FOR BRANDS LIKE ROLLS-ROYCE AND COCA-COLA
WORKING IN AN OFFICE EVERYDAY DROVE ME A BIT MAD
Started an adventure company taking people on life changing expeditions.
Got obsessed with making the best looking video content I could with the most minimal equipment and that meant using only a phone.
I was selected by Apple store to do staff iPhone video training.
Started Touch Video Academy to pass on my skills.
This year I’ve already been to Sweden, Dubai, Rome, French Alps, India, Snowdownia.
To make iPhone videos and give workshops for organisations like Natwest, OSL films and the Happy Start-Up School.
I have event given a full workshop in nothing but a towel, but decided to spare you and leave that picture out of the slide.
One of my first ever phone films
What you can do with very little experience or kit
This was shot and edited made using only an iPhone 5 and a cheap USB mic for the voiceover.
I even had it on the wrong settings for some of the shoot.
How many people here have been involved with creating videos for marketing?
Just a few stats to demonstreight why video is important…
There is 100% a time and a place for getting a professionally made video.
I am not suggesting that mobile totally replaces pro video productions.
What I believe is that anyone can actually make impactful video content for a range of uses with only their phones, and in some cases it’s a better tool for the job.
I am not suggesting that mobile video totally replaces pro video productions. There is a level of quality you cannot achieve with mobile.
What I believe is that anyone can actually make impactful video content for a range of uses with only their phones, and in some cases it’s a better tool for the job.
Sometimes large production values are wasted, because the end user might be watching the video on a 3 inch screen on the toilet.
Two different common reactions from people when they see a large camera…
The phone approach allowed me to capture the excitement from the day from the POV of one go the kids attending. The other camera crew had a nightmare.
Most people picture video on you phone as portrait shaker footage that you can’t watch for more than 5 seconds but…
Hollywood directors are adopting the phone to shoot feature length films. SS new film Unsane was shot entirely on an iPhone 7.
You will see whole news reports on the BBC to CNN made on a phone without realising it.
You can shoot, edit, and share from one device.
The learning curve is far less steep than traditional video production.
Content turnaround times can be so much faster.
Breaks down the most common barrier
Most people already have what they need in their pockets.
That is why I think we should all be considering using mobiles as a serious video content tool.
Get your phones out.
I teach on iPhone as with android there are so many different styles of phone its hard to have one answer for all.
Like it or not iPhones are the most commonly phones, especially within creative industries.
But what I teach is directly transferable to any phone with an ok camera.
Top tip on: How to use your phone…
Unless intentional, having the focus move around or exposure change during a shot drops the quality like stone.
SHOW HOW
GET CROWD TO DO IT
Top tip on: How to compose your shots….
SHOW HOW TO FRAME a shot
Compostion – how you frame a shot
HOLD UP YOUR PHONES
Top tip on: How to compose your shots….
EVERYONE TAKE A CLIP USING THE RULE OF THIRDS
Top tip on: What other kit you might need…
SHOW KIT
Top tip on: What to shoot…
Timelapse to set scene - take shot of people entering BSEO
Slowmotion to focus on detail - Slo-mo of ticket scanning
Movement to give life - behind seat slide shot of talk.
Edit tight.
Over 73% of consumers decide weather they are going to watch a video to the end in under 30 seconds.
And over 60% said they prefer videos under 1 minute long . (Animoto)
Ad example
I shot and edited only using my phone this for a Facebook, optimised to stay under 30 seconds.
*Phone cameras and apps will continue to improve, I can see more and more video production companies simplifying to mobile devices.
I will be staying ahead of this curve and you should too.
*YouTube continues to see around a 100% increase on video consumption per year.
*Smartphone traffic will exceed Desktop traffic by 2021 (Cisco)
Globally, IP video traffic will be 82 percent of all consumer Internet traffic by 2021.
It’s no longer be only those with big budgets creating great content that competes for customers attention and converts.
RED makes cameras make worlds best cinema cameras, that are are used to shoot the new star wars films are making a phone.
Serious camera companies are moving into the mobile arena.
Using mobiles to create video will become more commonplace and
team training or bespoke workshops.
Or ask me any questions you may have.
