Editor's Notes
This is an example of an assignment that could be used with this lesson/lecture. A 2 part assignment that includes a portion that the librarian will grade.
“In addition to these objectives my goal for you would be to do some additional critical thinking and come to think about how your information need can be somewhat fluid throughout your research process. You may need to look for general information in order to become acquainted with your research topic before you move to locating your scholarly article and then go back to looking for general information if you come across additional information that you need to familiarize yourself with. This is an information seeking skill that is vital for successful and efficient searching.”
Students are asked to describe what each of the types of information needs – using their own words and examples.
Ask students to identify in the assignment what exactly are the information needs for this assignment.
Short discussion with students about how they use Google as a searching tool and how successful they feel they are in context to different types of information needs.
Students and instructor discuss how Authority is created and contextual as well as having students using their own words to define each of the other terms.
This is a the checklist that should be used while evaluating research, tie this list in with the previous discussion on definitions and how it effects the value of the information.
Think-Pair-Share: Students are to break into pairs, using the open web to define and describe their topic (using reliable sources) and then also locating a scholarly article from an academic database.
Discuss how throughout this session you were able to establish what the information need was, how to apply the criteria, and how they now know how to judge the best information source.
