Romantic Comedy
WOMEN AND GIRLS
• Romcoms get in touch with women’s
emotions; girls generally flow with the
scenes and feelings shown in the film
(for example; the finding love scenes,
the falling in love scenes, the fight for
love scenes and losing the person you
love scenes). Usually, girls see their own
image and feelings in the film which
allows them to relate to the events in
the film.
• Stereotypically, every woman dreams of
finding a man that will sweep her of her
feet. Women typically enjoy watching
happy families, perfect marriages and
unrealistic relationships which all tie in
to the romantic comedy genre.

Romantic Comedy
TEEN ROM-COMS
Rom-coms targeted towards the younger
generation of teenagers are popular in
today’s society. A typical teen rom-
com would target women from the
ages 12-25. Often, the
actors/actresses are a similar age in
the film so the audience feel like they
can relate to the characters. Teen
rom-coms such as “A Cinderella Story”
and “Mean Girls” both have
characters from similar stereotypes,
lifestyles and classes as the target
audience. Most teenage rom-coms are
made in America which targets the
audience towards American or English
teenagers.

Romantic Comedy
A MORE MATURE AUDIENCE
Other romcoms such as “My Big Fat
Greek Wedding” and “Pretty
Woman” are targeted at a much
older, mature audience of around
30-45. These films are made of a
more mature whit and romance
and could involve bad language,
sexual references and sex scenes.
They could also include more complex
storylines and the themes in the
film could appeal more to a middle-
aged woman. The actors/actresses
in the film could be of a similar age
to the audience, again so they
remain relatable and engaging.
