Computer vision syndrome is caused by regular prolonged use of digital screens like computers, laptops, and phones. It can cause eye dryness and irritation, headaches, blurred vision, and neck and back pain from poor posture. The main causes include poor positioning, glare, uncorrected refractive errors, decreased blinking, exposure to high-energy blue light, and fixed posture over long periods of time. To prevent these issues, one should change posture frequently, reduce glare, use blue light filtering options, follow the 20-20-20 rule of looking away every 20 minutes, increase blinking, and take regular breaks from screens.
2. Computer Vision Syndrome
• It is due to use of Computer, Laptop, Mobile phone, Mp4, Mp5, PSP like digital
screen
3. What is Computer Vision Syndrome?
• Computer Vision Syndrome : is the general term used to describe a variety of
vision related symptoms that may be aggravated by regular constant use of a
computer/mobile for two or more hours a day.
7. • This means that while working using a computer, we tend not to blink as
often as we should. •
• Normal Blink rate : 16-20 per minute.
• During computer use, blink rate : to 6-8 per minute.
• Blinking is critically important for spreading of tears to form an even film on
the eye surface and also in refreshing this tear film. Thus in the absence of
adequate blinking, eyes become dry and irritated
•
Causes : 4.Decrease in Blinking frequency:
8. • HEV light emitted by computers is another serious source of light that can
damage the retina and cause macular degeneration.
• HEV blue-violet light in the narrow 415-455nm band is particularly
damaging to eyes, in particular the lens and retina.
• The blue band of the light spectrum yields more energy and can pass
straight through your eye – resulting in myopia and macular
degeneration
Causes :5.HEV ( HIGH-ENERGY VISIBLE ) Blue Light
9. Causes : 6.Precipitating/Other factor :
How close you sit to your computer or device ?
Fixed posture while working long hours
Constant gazing at a near distance at the
monitor (which leads to convergence fatigue).
Dry Eyes
Coming in from the exterior
10. • Dry Eyes, which can lead to red, irritated eyes
• Intermittent blurred vision when viewing your screen or device
• Blurred distance vision when looking away from your screen or device
• Headaches
• Neck pain +/- back pain
• sitting in the same position for hours causes neck, back and shostiffness and tension headaches,
which in turn cause TMJ ( Temporo Mandibular Joint) pain
Common signs and symptoms:
16. 6. Other :
• Blink : Computer users should make a conscious effort to blink more often.
• Dry Eye: can use teartplus eye drop.
• Eye massage.
• Take a break every 30-45 min while on Digital screen.
• LUX level adjustment in Office.
