MIAMI, FL September 17, 2013 – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-
Dade County is proud to present the return of Spanish-born, Miami-based Latin Grammy
Award-winning vocalist BUIKA. As part of the Center’s 2013-2014 Live at Knight Series, the
flamenco fusion singer will perform a sensual and eclectic concert complete with hits and songs
from her new album La Noche Más Larga on December 1, 2013 at 8 p.m. in the acoustically
superb John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall.
Tickets to BUIKA are $45 and $65*. Tickets are available to Arsht Center Members now and to
the general public on September 23. Tickets may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht
Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.
“The Arsht Center is thrilled announce the anticipated return of BUIKA – a phenomenal artist of
an international acclaim that is proud to call Miami her home,” said John Richard, president and
CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “Three years ago, BUIKA amazed South Florida audiences
with her raw and emotional vocal talent during a sold-out performance in the Knight Concert
Hall. Now, she’s back with a new critically-acclaimed album that continues to prove why she’s
one of NPR’s ’50 greatest voices of all time!’”
Originally from Mallorca, Spain, BUIKA’s musical repertoire embodies a sublime cross-cultural
fusion of styles – mixing the traditional Spanish genre of classic coplas, boleros, and rumbas
with jazz, soul, and popular dance rhythms. She is frequently compared to diverse singers such
2. as Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas and Cesaria Evora, but has created a sound completely her
own – with a voice described as ‘velvet gravel.’
With La Noche Más Larga (The Longest Night, 2013), the artist’s latest and first self-produced
album, BUIKA continues to knock down the walls that surround flamenco – the root source of
everything she does, but a tradition that can’t contain her ever-expanding vision. A dazzling
group of musicians and long-time collaborators such as keyboardist Iván “Melón” Lewis, bassist
Alain Pérez, and percussionists Ramón Porrina and Israel Suárez “El Piraña” joined the singer
to form a powerful group with the talent and imagination to match the singer’s disregard for
genre boundaries. As usual, BUIKA’s powerhouse voice renders those lines invisible.
“I tour through all of these different countries and I sing in Spanish,” says BUIKA. “I want to
prove that it doesn’t matter where a musician comes from—people understand it. It doesn’t
matter where I perform—Turkey, France, Japan, the U.S.—people cry in the same places in the
songs and they don’t understand the words I’m singing.”
Since releasing her self-titled debut album in 2005, BUIKA has risen to international fame,
recording alongside Nelly Furtado and Seal, and headlining festivals from Las Vegas to London.
Her second album, Mi Niña Lola (2007), firmly established BUIKA as a master of flamenco
rhythms – showcasing her powerful vocals on traditional bulerías and tanguillos, accompanied
by famed flamenco guitarist Niño Josele. Her next recording effort, Niña de Fuego (2008),
helped catapult BUIKA into the ranks of the most exciting international voices in modern Latin
music. Produced, arranged, and directed by five-time Grammy Award-winning producer Javier
Limón, the album garnered two Latin Grammy Awards and showcased BUIKA in a live
performance on the televised awards show. In 2009, she released El Ultimo Trago, a stunning
tribute to Mexico’s iconic ranchera vocalist Chavela Varga.
BUIKA's most remarkable soundtrack and film collaboration was in 2011, when renowned
Spanish director Pedro Almódovar featured her in his movie “La Piel Que Habito” (The Skin I
Live in), in which she performed “Por el Amor de Amar” (For Love’s Sake) and “Se Me Hizo
Facil” (I Found it Easy). Most recently, she completed her second book of poetry, To Those
Who Loved Hardcore Women and Left Them, and is currently working on her first documentary
feature film. For more information, please visit www.conchabuikamusic.com, Facebook:
