The Pop Ups
Two-time Grammy-nominated duo defines today’s family music scene
North Adams, Massachusetts—
The Pop Ups, a twice-Grammy-
nominated electro-acoustic
kindie pop duo, whips “Daft Punk quality
beats, top-notch musicianship, and not a
single instruction for brushing teeth or
saying please,” (Huff Post Parents) into
songs that carry a positive message while
turning kids into dancing maniacs.
With songs such as “Apes in Capes,” “Box of Crayons,” and “Costume Party,” The Pop Ups showcase
their skillful blend of sophisticated musical references (from ‘80s pop to classic soul, all infused with
club-ready beats), and kid-centric (yet universal) lyrics. Throw in their colorfully engaging live shows
(which are a visual-performing arts and educational smorgasbord) and it becomes clear that
The Pop Ups are poised at the forefront of kid-friendly entertainment that embraces the silly, absurd,
and even the mundane while never once sacrificing quality.
It took just a week for the duo to record their first album of high-caliber, child-centric music that entire
families could enjoy. The record, entitled Outside Voices, was self-released by the band in 2010.
Overwhelmed by the instant and exuberant responses of friends, critics, and the general public, Jacob
Stein and Jason Rabinowitz, the two halves comprising The Pop Ups, knew they’d found their calling.
Outside Voices also inspired PASTA! A Pop Ups Puppet Musical, in which Stein and Rabinowitz
showcase their signature blend of performing and visual arts using song, dance, video, large-scale

puppets, cardboard props, and hand-painted sets. PASTA! enjoyed successful runs in New York and Los
Angeles and also led to an offer to tour with Yo Gabba Gabba! Live in 2011, an opportunity that
catapulted The Pop Ups to a new level of fame.
The Pop Ups’ second album, Radio Jungle, released in 2012, led to their first Grammy nomination and
features many notable collaborators, including Shawana Kemp of Shine and the Moonbeams and
legendary psych-rock pioneer Peter Stampfel of The Fugs and The Holy Modal Rounders. The band’s
latest release, 2014’s Appetite for Construction, gave them a second Grammy nomination, and has
since proved to be their magnum opus: Sirius XM program director Mindy Thomas called it “an all-ages
album that is defining the family music scene today.”
Jason Rabinowitz and Jacob Stein, the two masterful and spirited musicians comprising The Pop Ups,
bring their backgrounds in the worlds of music and children’s education to every live show. Rabinowitz,
also the frontman and primary singer/songwriter of Brooklyn-based indie-pop outfit The Bloodsugars,
has worked with children for twelve years. Rabinowitz spent his initial years out of college teaching early
childhood music classes, and, most recently, stepped into the director’s seat to found Popsqueaks, a
mobile performing arts and music appreciation course for tots.
Stein, likewise, has been blending the visual and performing arts for children and adults since 2001. He
holds a B.A. from Yale and an M.F.A. in visual art from Columbia, and is the creator of the wildly
successful Bim Bom Musicfest, an early childhood music class now in its eleventh year at the Jewish
Community Project in Tribeca.
