DENVER - Swallow Hill Music kicks off the fall season featuring musicians who
masterfully draw from many genres to produce unique sounds of their own. Hawaiian
bluesman Willie K takes the stage in September, while October brings blues-folk
legend Rory Block, "Afropean" world/fusion musician Daby Touré, all-vocal rock band
Face, folk/comedy singer-songwriters Christine Lavin and Don White, and hip-
hop/classical duo Black Violin to Swallow Hill Music. These concerts and more go on-
sale Tuesday, July 7, at 10am.
Born and raised on the island of Maui, Willie K has been captivating audiences from
his hometown all the way to Asia and Europe. This September, he heads for Swallow
Hill Music. A guitar, bass, and ukulele virtuoso whose music artfully engages both
traditional Hawaiian roots music and the blues, Willie has been dubbed "a Hawaiian
Jimi Hendrix." He is a recipient of several prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano awards,
including Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and most recently, Rock Album
of the Year for his 2012 album Warehouse Blues.
Swallow Hill Music welcomes blues legend Rory Block this October. From her blazing
guitar licks to her soulful, gravelly vocals, it comes as no surprise that Rory has been
2. mentored by some of the greats, including Reverend Gary Davis and Mississippi John
Hurt. Since she first picked up the guitar at age ten, Block has been a trailblazer for
women in the blues, earning the Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year WC Handy
Award two years in a row. Of her newest album, Hard Luck Child: A tribute to Skip
James, Bill Wilson of Reflections in Blue remarked: "if you like acoustic guitar with
power, passion, finesse and a real flair, you'll find it in abundance here...She is a true
master at what she does and has earned her seat alongside the old masters of the
blues."
The songs of Daby Touré bring together languages, feelings, and sounds from all over
the globe in an amalgam of delightfully infectious world music. With roots in western
Africa, half a lifetime spent in Paris, and musical influences including The Police and
Stevie Wonder, Daby has a distinct and eclectic style that denies easy categorization.
Drawing from pop, soul, world, and rock, Daby's music is catchy and evocative, no
matter which language he sings in. Touré has shared the stage and studio with
legends Peter Gabriel, Rihanna, and Skip McDonald, among others. Daby comes to
Swallow Hill Music this October.
All-vocal rock band Face returns to Swallow Hill Music this October, hitting the ground
humming! Using only their voices for instruments, the Boulder natives deliver dazzling
vocal renditions of beloved songs old and new, covering bands ranging from Journey to
Mumford & Sons. With impeccable harmonies, renowned vocal drumming, and fun
choreography, Face promises an exciting night of stellar a cappella not to be missed.
This October, two funny folkies team up to deliver a dynamic "comedy concert" at
Swallow Hill Music. Long-time singer-songwriters and natural entertainers, Christine
Lavin and Don White have been working together since 2008 to put on hilarious-and
clean-musical comedy shows for audiences of all ages. Their cutting humor, witty
repartee, and catchy tunes are sure to leave audiences laughing, clapping, and toe-
tapping.
Wilner "Wil B" Baptiste and Kevin "Kev Marcus" Sylvester take the Swallow Hill Music
stage with their all-star band as Black Violin in October. Fusing classical violin and
viola seamlessly with the sounds of contemporary hip-hop, rock, and bluegrass, Black
Violin understands how to tastefully put a "backbeat on Bach". Whether performing for
troops in Iraq or for President Obama at the Inaugural Ball, Black Violin has captivated
audiences with riveting instrumentation, a good beat, and a style entirely its own.
