(TPM) SKILLS
KNOWLEDGE OF IT INFRASTRUCTURE & ARCHITECTURE
A sound foundational knowledge of IT infrastructure and architecture. Technical
expertise is what allows TPMs to objectively audit the feasibility of desired
project outcomes and align them with organizational capabilities and limitations.
TPMs must assess technical risks & competently answer questions from technical
people; this requires a good level of IT knowledge & experience
A BALANCE BETWEEN A PM & TECHNICAL ADVISOR
A good sense of balance between the roles of project manager and
technical advisor. Along with leading, managing &working with technical
professionals , technical PM’s work with non-technical PMs. They must be
able to give clear, concise status reports and updates to stakeholders who
don’t necessarily have a technical background
COMMUNICATE TO DIFFERENT AUDIENCES
A TPM must be able to communicate effectively in
both technical and non-technical terms. The ability
to break down complex technical information in
layman’s terms is absolutely critical for any
Technical Project Manager (TPM)
ORGANISATION AND LEADERSHIP
Any successful PM must be highly organized and able to keep meticulous track of
every aspect of every project. PMs must be able to inspire team buy-in by
articulating a clear vision, ensuring team members have the resources they need,
and resolve inner-team conflicts that will inevitably arise along the way
COMMUNICATIONS
A successful PM s bale to communicate effectively with team
members, organisational leaders, and stakeholders is a must for any
project manager. PMs must understand not just how to best
communicate to various audiences but also what to communicate
NEGOTIATION
An effective PM is a leader that must align strategic vision
with deliverable outcomes, the art of negotiation is a
critical tool in any PM’s belt. A successful project
manager is one practiced in ‘win-win negotiations’

Agile is an iterative approach to project management & software development that helps
teams deliver value to their customers faster & with fewer headaches. Instead of a "big
bang" launch, an agile team delivers work in small, but consumable, increments

Earned Value Management (EVM) helps PM’s to measure project performance. It is a
systematic project management process used to find variances in projects based on the
comparison of worked performed & work planned. It is used on the cost & schedule control

The PMI categorizes project management life cycle (series of activities to meet project goals)
as: Initiation: nature and scope of the project. Planning: time, cost, resources & scheduling.
Execution: processes used to complete the project. Closure: formal end of project

  • 1. TECHNICAL PROJECT MANAGER (TPM) SKILLS KNOWLEDGE OF IT INFRASTRUCTURE & ARCHITECTURE A sound foundational knowledge of IT infrastructure and architecture. Technical expertise is what allows TPMs to objectively audit the feasibility of desired project outcomes and align them with organizational capabilities and limitations. TPMs must assess technical risks & competently answer questions from technical people; this requires a good level of IT knowledge & experience A BALANCE BETWEEN A PM & TECHNICAL ADVISOR A good sense of balance between the roles of project manager and technical advisor. Along with leading, managing &working with technical professionals , technical PM’s work with non-technical PMs. They must be able to give clear, concise status reports and updates to stakeholders who don’t necessarily have a technical background COMMUNICATE TO DIFFERENT AUDIENCES A TPM must be able to communicate effectively in both technical and non-technical terms. The ability to break down complex technical information in layman’s terms is absolutely critical for any Technical Project Manager (TPM) ORGANISATION AND LEADERSHIP Any successful PM must be highly organized and able to keep meticulous track of every aspect of every project. PMs must be able to inspire team buy-in by articulating a clear vision, ensuring team members have the resources they need, and resolve inner-team conflicts that will inevitably arise along the way COMMUNICATIONS A successful PM s bale to communicate effectively with team members, organisational leaders, and stakeholders is a must for any project manager. PMs must understand not just how to best communicate to various audiences but also what to communicate NEGOTIATION An effective PM is a leader that must align strategic vision with deliverable outcomes, the art of negotiation is a critical tool in any PM’s belt. A successful project manager is one practiced in ‘win-win negotiations’ AGILE PRACTICE WHAT IS AGILE PRACTICE? Agile is an iterative approach to project management & software development that helps teams deliver value to their customers faster & with fewer headaches.
