DreamWorks animation- darker blue to suit genre, flickering white noise and ring refer to themes of movie
and title.
Convention of horror film!!!!!! Low shot zoom to old dark house, tree restricting audiences view- imposing.
Sense of isolation created; only house around, one light on in the house, surrounded by darkness, hear rain
and don’t hear talking, don’t hear family around}convention of a horror movie.
Bedroom-safe, comfy, homely=false sense of security, relatable. Uniform-contrast-vulnerability, age.
Conversation-TV killing brain cells-irony, foreshadowing, talk about triggers e.g. phone call. Zoom from TV-
being watched by someone in TV. Light is flickering- no natural light, highlights shapes in room- makes it
look like something’s moving. Feels not normal. Lighting- dark, alone, cannot see clear view of room.
Match on action, doorway behind main victim, zoom into friends face- tension, makes you think something
is going to happen. Shadows behind victim, light behind friend. Foreshadowing something might happen?
Intense Story to laughing and joking, gossip- relatable, victim pretends to die= tension, scary, suspense,
climax=anti climax when realise joking.
The angle looking down on the victim sat on the floor=vulnerable, weak less importance. As if the camera is
the girl sitting on the bed looking down at her friend. On the stairs-full body shot of girls-show victim is in
uniform, white shirt, no tights/shoes} vulnerable. Friend is in darker uniform- cardigan, tights-threat?
Focus on Phone in foreground of shot. Background is dark, makes audience think there is something there.
Girl approaches phone- cannot see her face, reflection seems as if someone else is there, slow approach,
silence when answer phone – tension. Audience believes something is going to happen > after faking death.
Friends attitude-confidence-deteriorates, contrasts with victim’s nerves, over the shoulder shot- gives the
audience clearer understanding of situation, victims face clear- emotions- another anti-climax.
Opens fridge- blocking view, still climax expecting event when clear shot of dark hallway. Match on action-
slow zoom from hallway – looks as if someone watching, coming towards her. Walks past camera- it
doesn’t move. Dark windows-expecting something to happen.
TV turns on, extreme close up- emphasise emotion/facial expression. White noise-links with production
titles. As she walks into the room, slow panning- building tension (not knowing what’s in room)
Homely setting contrasts with dark lighting- building tension-white noise-creates tension acts as motif. TV
turns back on – noticeable in the reflection, gives audience more understanding. Camera zooms on remote
giving the audience an understanding that it wasn’t her friend.
Slow zoom from the tele, looks like the being watched from her TV (reference to film later) isolating
subject=vulnerable. Raising voice showing signs of panic- she wants to think it’s human. TV turns back on.
White noise gets louder as she moves closer unpleasant noise. Neutral- no bright colours, so white is
brightest colour- shows victims innocence.
2. Quick shots from TV-plug- TV. Pulling plug-ignores safety-panic. Spark from plug-danger. Eerie silence, hear
victim breathing- sound of relief then Pan across. TV-figure/shape moves, loud whooshing noise. Follows
the girl when spins. Camera stays still, victim walks out of shot- suspense. What is she looking at? Point of
view shot into kitchen. Fridge opens, reflection in dark window.
Runs to shut fridge-panic. Same shot as earlier-when door closes, hallway blurry, reflection on floor- looks
like figure-expect event. Hallway focuses when victim looks down-nothing there. Building tension.
High shot looking down stairs. Victim peeks round wall- vulnerable could be harmful? Lighting reflection on
floor. She’s small, big hallway, body language} vulnerable. Can only see one light source yet- shadow. Stair
banister-jail cells- trapped} vulnerable.
Footsteps are loud, low shot, feet. Cannot see her face; tell by body language she is scared. Focus on liquid
on floor- mistaken for blood? See her reflection on floor-light behind her makes her look like she’s wearing
white dress. Water moving- flickering under door. She walks through water-too scared/panicked to care?
Door opens-TV on, white noise (again white noise reference- hinting major theme) fast, unpleasant shots
w/unpleasant noise. Colour drains- cold (water) scream- unpleasant.
