Extern Evaluation for Kelly Gomez
Please scale your experience with your extern using the following guideline:
1 (needs to develop these skills) 2 (developing these skills) 3 (possesses basic skills) 4
(demonstrates strong skills) 5 (demonstrates excellent skills)
Punctuality (student made contact in advance of arrival; showed up on time each day): 5
Comments: Kelly was very punctual and professional about showing up for the externship.
Work ethic (student demonstrated initiative; completed tasks on time; showed interest in
the work.): 5
Comments: Kelly worked very diligently on all the projects that she was assigned throughout
the externship, and demonstrated great enthusiasm and interest in all the aspects of the
magazine.
Workplace culture (student respected coworkers and adapted to workplace norms): 4
Comments: Kelly was very respectful and friendly to all of her coworkers.
Presented as young professional should? (student acted in a professional way at the
office): 3
Comments: This is the realm in which Kelly has the most room to grow. At the beginning of
the externship she seemed very quiet and timid, sometimes speaking unusually quietly out of a
desire not to disrupt others at the office. We have confidence that as she continues to gain more
experience in workplace settings she will develop the confidence to take up space and speak
assertively within an office setting.
General Comments from Tikkun's Managing Editor: Kelly approached her work at Tikkun
with a great deal of care and seriousness. I was particularly impressed with the great care with
which she approached the process of proofing the laid-out version of the Spring 2015 issue of
the magazine. In her reviews of unsolicited submissions, she offered very clear-eyed and
helpful summaries of the pros and cons of various submissions, as well as helpful advice about
how certain articles could be improved through editorial intervention. When asked to help
brainstorm possible themes for the magazine to cover, she readily came up with interesting
ideas such as the topic of organic agriculture and sustainable food production, and the topic of
the dynamics of intercultural communication. It is clear that she is very smart and dedicated,
and we enjoyed working with her. It seems like she has a bright path ahead of her, whatever
career she chooses.
General Comments from Tikkun's Audience Development and Operations Manager: The
operations side of Tikkun requires the ability to juggle many different sorts of tasks within a
given day and Kelly was always ready to help with any new project I gave her. During this
week, her tasks ranged from assisting with mass mailings, researching potential web
2. advertisers, conducting
membership outreach
etc. On the first day,
Kelly was eager to help
with data entry, a task
the requires a nuanced
attention to detail. She
patiently learned the
different process we
have subscription
management and
worked diligently on the
task she set forth. I think
that over time Kelly will
grow more comfortable
in a work place
environment. Overall, I
really appreciated
Kelly’s positive attitude
regarding her work. She
was a pleasure to
collaborate with these
past two weeks.
