The document discusses the need for action to address climate change and environmental destruction. It argues that Western culture promotes overconsumption and that small individual changes can make a big impact if adopted widely, such as reducing meat consumption and using alternatives to single-use plastics. The author aims to become an inspirational figure to motivate more people to adopt sustainable behaviors through their own example and influence. Influential protest movements and figures like Greta Thunberg and Banksy are discussed as examples of effecting change. The conclusion restates that the goal is to inspire collective action that could help save the planet.
2. The subject of my manifesto
As you are all aware, our planet is dying and it’s our fault. As a species and as a culture, we are
destructive and selfish. We are all to blame and it’s our responsibility to fix it. Its not to late, but time
is ticking. I aim to make change and inspire people in a way that will influence them to think twice
about their decisions to overall have a better impact on our planet.
3. What is causing our earth to die?
Everything we do in our everyday life damages our earth in some way or another. We’re obsessed
with traveling and we get around in cars and planes which emit tons of co2 which warm our
environment. We produce tons of single use plastic which takes seconds to make, seconds to use but
will remain on this planet for the next 300 years.
4. Meat industry
However, one of the biggest causes for climate change that you wouldn’t have even thought about, is
the meat industry. Cattle farming requires a lot of land, and in order to get this land we have to chop
down trees. And if not only that was bad enough cows also create methane from burping, and there
are currently 1.5 billion of them on earth
5. Culture
Western culture is toxic, all we is produce and destroy. We all work for a living and show no
compassion for anyone or anything. 42% of people agree with me in saying western culture is toxic
I carefully studied the country of Thailand while I was there for 3 weeks which I documented through
photographs, and their culture was very different to ours in many ways. There compassion and love for
animals was much stronger, their love for the environment around them, they had a lot more tree’s in
their citys than what we have and their jungles were untouched.
6. Exploitation of animals
Although they do care for animals a lot more than us, animals are still exploited and it’s funded by
western tourism. You can pay £40 (2000 Baht) and get your photo taken with a real-life tiger,
although, in photos this seems nice, there is a cruel reality behind closed doors. These animals do not
belong inside cages and should be free to roam through out the Asian jungle.
7. Are WE being exploited?
Our governments have the technology and the means to solve all the problems our earth is suffering
right now, however, they choose to use the un-sustainable sources, simply because it’s cheaper.
However, the consequences we suffer over seeing money signs over the well being of our planet are
much more costly.
Our government are more interested in creating a profit than giving us a better life.
However, it isn’t entirely they’re fault. It’s a group effort, both society and our government need to
get our act together and think about what’s right.
8. Examples of this are; burning fossil fuels rather
than using renewable sources of energy like
hydro/wind and solar power.
However, it’s a lot easier to make money from
oil rigs and the more and more fossil fuels we
use, the more money we can sell it for. Our
government are more interested in creating a
profit than giving us a better life.
However, it isn’t entirely they’re fault. It’s a
group effort, both society and our government
need to get our act together and think about
what’s right.
9. Culture vs species
Is it our culture that’s the problem, or is it in human nature to be selfish? Although some people’s
cultures are less destructive than others, there's nothing humans do that isn’t harmful to the planet
in one way or another. A staggering 95% of people believe that humans is selfish. Is this something
that can be changed?
10. The solution?
If we make very small changes to our everyday life, it can have a massive impact. For example, if we
use paper straws instead of plastic ones, we would be producing 73,000 metrics tons of plastic less a
year. If we choose to catch the train to work rather than drive, we will create less pollution.
11. Something that people can try that seems
challenging at first, but is really and easy and
rewarding, if we all go vegetarian for 1 week of
every month, we would be eating 23kg of meat
less a year (On average) if people try it out for
1 week, and realise how easy it is, they will be
saving 100kg of meat a year. If everyone did
this, that’s saving 80 million animals; and 80
million animals worth of farmland.
12. My aims/motives
I want to make myself into an inspirational figure and influence people into making these small
changes. 85% of people say they care about the planet; I want to get that to 100. 42% of people say
they are influenced by inspirational figures, so that’s what I'm going to do to push my motives.
I want to make myself a walking example that making small changes to your everyday life are not as
scary as they seem and are really easy.
13. Why is this important?
We need to change our way of life before it’s too late, and the only way humans will change is if
they’re influenced.
Not enough people are aware of the consciences of their actions so its important that I achieve the
aim of my manifesto.
Its important that we all come together to encourage our world governments to make the difference
that we don’t have the power to achieve.
14. How people have been influenced
There have been many influential people that have made a very big difference throughout society, for
example, Greta Thunberg is a 16 year old environmental activist and she is getting her voice heard by
both the public, and world leaders. She is an inspiration to me.
A topic that I want to touch on is how the art world have been reacting to these inspirational figures
and how inspirational figures have been reacting to artist.
15. Political Activism
Banksy is a very well-known anonymous artist who focuses on political activism. He aims to send a
message through his art work by reacting to big social and political issues. An example of this is his
support for extinction rebellion, Extinction rebellion is a global environmental movement, Their aim is
to create as much chaos as they can, much like the suffragettes, in order to encourage/force our
government to create a change.
16. And it WORKS. The suffragettes got the vote
for women, and the government declared a
national state of climate emergency after
extinction rebellions protest. Banksy got
influenced by them and influenced them and
everyone else with his work and created a very
big reaction.
17.
18. Protest
The definition of art can be very broad, an artist can argue that anything can be art and anyone can
be an artist. However art can be used as a form of protest. 59% of people agree with me in saying art
is an important part of our society. Through history people have used art to gain a reaction, such as
propaganda or just use it as an emotional, creative output or both.
19. Seeing inspirational figures such as Greta
Thunberg and Banksy stand up to our
governments is really great because If we all
come together and look up to those who are
trying to make a real change, our world might
actually have a chance and we could all have
the power to create real difference, but it cant
happen if we don’t work together, which is
why I created my manifesto.
20. Conclusion
In conclusion, The aim of my manifesto is to inspire people to make a change, make myself an
inspiration. I’m doing this to have a better outcome on our planet and so we can all have a home to
live on. I want us all to come together and create our own powerful movement and hopefully make
change before its too late.
