6. PRESCRIPTIONS AND DISPENSING
There are various systems in use.
Dispensing
o in the consulting rooms by the nurses who are authorised to do so under section
56(6) of the Nursing Act.
o in the Pharmacy by Pharmacist and Pharmacist assistants.
Prescribing:
o Done by professional nurses and doctors
o prescriptions are written according to Essential Medicine List (EML)
o the script must be dated, be legible, signed
Patients are to be educated on the following:
o use of medication
o Treatment compliance
o side effects
o complications
7. CCMDD: (Centralized chronic medicines
dispensing and distribution)
o All chronic patients who are stable, more than a year on a treatment, with
normal
blood results are referred to CCMDD
o They collect treatment from pickup points or their facilities
o They collect for six months and return back to their facilities to renew
scripts
8. PHARMACY:
Each facility has a pharmacy
The pharmacy personnel (pharmacist assistants or pharmacist) is in charge of
the pharmacy and is
responsible for;
Dispensing of prescriptions
Advising the patients on
o use of medication
o Treatment compliance
o side effects
o complications
9. Ordering and maintaining the stock levels both in
the pharmacy and in the consulting rooms
where applicable.
o Check the quantity on hand and then order according to the ROL (reorder
level)
o The orders are placed from the Regional Pharmacy
On different days per facility .each facility has its unique date for placing
their order.
By an authorised person Pharmacist, Pharmacist Assistant (signature
specimen is collected every year at the end of financial year)
10. Receiving of stock
When stock is delivered ,the pharmacy assistants or pharmacist receive stock
check and sign for the invoice which is in a duplicate. The other copy remain
and the
other copy is send back to the regional pharmacy
11. Receiving of stock 2
The following actions need to be taken when receiving stock;
Fridge items should be dealt with priority
Boxes are sealed
If that it is what you ordered
the items match the invoice
Check for missing items
Check the expiry date
Isolate medicines that are short dated or expired
Isolate items that are leaking or damaged
Store fridge items in a fridge
Apply FEFO (First Expiry First Out) or FIFO (First I First Out)
