How to Make the Licensing Game
The game is adapted from David Wiley’s online game on finding and using open educational resources
found at http://indstudy1.org/univ/355460515034/Flash/Lesson2/PracticeVersion.html

The goal of the game is to determine whether or not different types of Creative Commons licensed
content can be combined and remixed in order to create a new, legal, and open resource.

The four types of content are: Text, Image, Music, and Video

     1. Download the content cards file found at http://wikieducator.org/ESC_OER_Taskforce
     2. Cut out the cards and glue them to a heavier weight paper to make them sturdy and reusable.
        We used index cards.
     3. Place 1 of each content card type in a Ziploc bag. Make enough bags for your group size. Make
        sure that you have some bags of cards that are legal and some that are not. We gave each group
        3 bags.
     4. Make enough copies of the cards, the remix sheet, and the participants instructions for your
        group size. The remix sheet and participant instructions can also be found at
        http://wikieducator.org/ESC_OER_Taskforce
     5. Each group is given one remix sheet to place the cards on, 3 bags of cards, and a set of
        instructions.
     6. To help with facilitation of the game, each bag was marked with a colored sticker and number to
        help us quickly identify which were legal mixes and which were not.
     7. Have each group place on bag of cards on the remix sheet at a time. Have them report back to
        the facilitators if it is legal resource or not and why.
     8. Participants work through all bags.

Conversation should be lively. We had four facilitators present to help with our 5 groups. For more
advanced groups or if you have more time, you can also have participants determine what creative
commons license they would assign to their new legally remixed resource.
