Textbooks versus Personalized Learning
● Is it possible for technology to provide a more even
playing field for learning experiences than traditional
textbooks?
● The general model for education involves using the
physical textbook to provide a base for the curriculum
● New technology allows additions like PDF, digital
materials, and graphic options
Evergreen
● Evergreen Public Schools are using technology to provide
a more consistent learning experience
● They have changed how to look at and create a curriculum
● Quality education needs tools that work with their
curricular goals and their technological investments
● New one-to-one technology investment
In this curriculum…
Quality education through technology means the tool needs to:
● Be easily communicated and distributed to schools, teachers, and students
● Be quickly accessed across devices
● Provide an adaptive and flexible resource that can change with needs of
students
● Support students and teachers in a variety of classroom settings
● Help measure learning to empower teachers and school leaders to track
success and adjust accordingly
Limitations with the Traditional Textbook
● Might not always capture the particular needs of a
district
○ Customization could be helpful, but textbook does not allow this
● Teachers might not always use the textbook to plan their
instruction
● It may not speak to the needs of every child in the
classroom
Curriculum as a Service (CaaS)
● CaaS changes curriculum from a static, paper-based
product to an adaptable, cloud-based service
● Powered by technology and human expertise rather than
strictly static materials like textbooks
○ And their correlated worksheets, questions, recommendations,
assessments etc.
● Provides a better tool for consistency
CaaS
Perks of CaaS include a combination of:
● A cloud-based platform that enables districts to edit, author, curate and
publish dynamic and adaptive instructional materials and track their
impact
● Digital content that provides districts with a starting point of high-
quality materials
● Professional services that provide guidance on how to strategically manage
classrooms, guide student learning, and track impact
Brazil Using CaaS
● Brazil is adding new national standards of 21st century
knowledge
● Teachers all over the country have access to materials
through support from Nova Escola and Google
● Makes high quality materials available to all teachers
Highlights
● Textbooks do not provide the resources that technology
can
● Schools in Evergreen and Brazil embrace CaaS
● CaaS changes curriculum from a static, paper-based
product to an adaptable, cloud-based service
● This allows more flexible learning for different kinds of
teachers and students
Pitfalls
● Online learning has to avoid one size fits all
ramifications
● Students need to be able to understand hard book
resources and be able to read and understand novels off
the screen
My Opinion
● Technology can provide lots of new options to help
students with different learning needs
● 21st century knowledge and technology capability is
important
● However, we have to avoid evolving to one size fits all
technology capability in the classroom
● I still believe in integrating hard book sources

My Presentation on Tech in the Curriculum

Textbooks versus Personalized Learning ● Is it possible for technology to provide a more even playing field for learning experiences than traditional textbooks? ● The general model for education involves using the physical textbook to provide a base for the curriculum ● New technology allows additions like PDF, digital materials, and graphic options
  • 3. Evergreen ● Evergreen Public Schools are using technology to provide a more consistent learning experience ● They have changed how to look at and create a curriculum ● Quality education needs tools that work with their curricular goals and their technological investments ● New one-to-one technology investment
  • 4. In this curriculum… Quality education through technology means the tool needs to: ● Be easily communicated and distributed to schools, teachers, and students ● Be quickly accessed across devices ● Provide an adaptive and flexible resource that can change with needs of students ● Support students and teachers in a variety of classroom settings ● Help measure learning to empower teachers and school leaders to track success and adjust accordingly

Limitations with the Traditional Textbook ● Might not always capture the particular needs of a district ○ Customization could be helpful, but textbook does not allow this ● Teachers might not always use the textbook to plan their instruction ● It may not speak to the needs of every child in the classroom
  • 6. Curriculum as a Service (CaaS) ● CaaS changes curriculum from a static, paper-based product to an adaptable, cloud-based service ● Powered by technology and human expertise rather than strictly static materials like textbooks ○ And their correlated worksheets, questions, recommendations, assessments etc. ● Provides a better tool for consistency

CaaS Perks of CaaS include a combination of: ● A cloud-based platform that enables districts to edit, author, curate and publish dynamic and adaptive instructional materials and track their impact ● Digital content that provides districts with a starting point of high- quality materials ● Professional services that provide guidance on how to strategically manage classrooms, guide student learning, and track impact
  • 8. Brazil Using CaaS ● Brazil is adding new national standards of 21st century knowledge ● Teachers all over the country have access to materials through support from Nova Escola and Google ● Makes high quality materials available to all teachers
  • 9. Highlights ● Textbooks do not provide the resources that technology can ● Schools in Evergreen and Brazil embrace CaaS ● CaaS changes curriculum from a static, paper-based product to an adaptable, cloud-based service ● This allows more flexible learning for different kinds of teachers and students
  • 10. Pitfalls ● Online learning has to avoid one size fits all ramifications ● Students need to be able to understand hard book resources and be able to read and understand novels off the screen
  • 11. My Opinion ● Technology can provide lots of new options to help students with different learning needs ● 21st century knowledge and technology capability is important ● However, we have to avoid evolving to one size fits all technology capability in the classroom ● I still believe in integrating hard book sources
