Teddy Roosevelt wanted the United States to expand its global influence at the turn of the 20th century. As a veteran of the Spanish-American War and new U.S. president, Roosevelt saw Latin America as inferior and pushed for American control of the Panama Canal by supporting a Panamanian revolution when Colombia would not agree to U.S. terms.
