2. Do you drink bottled water?
According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, more
than half of all Americans drink bottled water and about a
third of the public consumes it regularly. Bottled water
sales have tripled in the past 10 years, to about $4 billion a
year.
3. It’s apparent that as Americans, we like our bottled water. Here’s
something to consider before you purchase that next bottle: you
guessed it, the pH.
While pure water has a neutral pH of 7, many brands are surprisingly
acidic, especially those produced by the soda companies. Some
brands of bottled water have a pH as low as 4 (the same as tomato
juice or beer!)
If you are looking for bottled water with a neutral or elevated pH,
Fiji, Evian and Smart Water (among others) are good picks.
4. Rather than trying to memorize the pH of all the different
bottled water brands, my recommendation is to drink more
tap water as it tends to have a more neutral pH and it’s also
much less expensive. Rinsing with water that has a pH of 7
or higher after mealtime can help reduce your risk for
cavities. A little change like this will have your teeth and
your wallet thanking you!
