4. Construction Safety
• Nearly 6.5 million people work at approximately
252,000 construction sites across the nation on any
day and the fatal injury rate for the construction
industry is higher than any other industry
• The main injuries in the construction field are due to
following factors.
• Falls
• Trench collapse
• Scaffold Collapse
• Electric shock

5. SCAFFOLDING
A temporary structure on the outside of the building ,
made of wooden planks and metal poles , used by
workmen while building ,repairing , or cleaning the
building.

6. TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING
SUPPORTED SCAFFOLDING
Supported scaffolds consist of one or more platforms
supported by outrigger beams, brackets, poles, legs,
uprights, posts, frames, or similar rigid support.

7. SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDING
Suspended scaffolds are platforms suspended by ropes,
or other non-rigid means, from an overhead structure.

8. CANTILEVER SCAFFOLDING
The Cantilever Scaffold Tower is most commonly used
to work over existing obstacles on the ground, such as
stairs, porches, machinery or anything else that won't
budge.

9. ROLLING SCAFFOLDING
• A scaffold is a temporary structure, usually made of
metal tubing, which provides support for workers and
materials used in construction and it have wheels that
give them mobility.

10. HAZARDS IN SCAFFOLDING
• Usually hazards occur when things or the
apparatus is not used properly.
• Similarly hazards also occur in the use of the
scaffolding
• When scaffolds are not used properly hazards
occur which are fall hazards or the electric
shock e-t c

11. HAZARDS (cont.)
• The main hazard is falling from height
In falling fatalities Globally about 60% of the fatalities occur
when person fall from a height less than 5 meters because
there is less reaction time.

12. HAZARDS (cont.)
• The second main hazard is electric shock
If scaffolding is made of steel and there laying a
naked electric wires there is a risk of electric shock
because whole of scaffolding become conductor as
steel is a good conductor of electricity

13. Hazards (cont.)
Bad planking is also a hazard to watch out when using
scaffolding.
Getting stuck to falling tools and equipments from
scaffolding is also a hazard.
Further results of failing of scaffolding are disturbing
budge to cast ratio, delays , disputes and claims etc.

14. Importance of life of Human being
• Allah Kreem says in Quran ,
“Whosoever kills an innocent human beings it
shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and
whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he
had saved the life of all mankind”
Qura’n 5:32

15. Solutions
There are many solutions to become safe from hazards
of scaffolding…
• Scaffold must be sound , rigid and sufficient to carry
its own weight plus 4 times the maximum intended
load without setting or displacement.
• Unstable objects such as barrels , boxes, loose bricks
or concrete blocks must not be used to support
scaffolds.

16. Solutions
• Scaffold must not be erected , moved , dismantled or altered
except under the supervision of a competent person.
• Scaffold must be equipped with guardrails and midrails .
• Scaffold accessories such as braces , brackets , trusses ,screw
legs or ladders that are damaged must be changed timely .

17. Solutions
• Work area should be clearly defined.
• Warn signs should be used.
• Components should be vertically aligned with spirit level .

18. Solutions
• Foundation should be firm and leveled.
• Position of sole plate and base plate should be correct
. Leveled ground.
• Try to start at highest point building area .

19. Solutions
• Check the distance from the building after a proper
interval of time. Distance should be moderate .
• Pins and badges should be fixed properly.
