Long-Term Goal
As of right now the long-term goal that I am striving for is to go into a Human Resource
Development career and hopefully become a manager and I want to specifically focus on
employee onboarding, employee retention, and employee termination. My family and I own
three restaurants, two franchise and one mom-and-pop restaurant called Hamburger Construction
Company that my twin sister and I are partners in. Because our businesses are family owned we
do not have a Human Resource department that we can rely on. I manage/supervise all three
restaurants and I have only myself, my father, and my sister when it comes to employee matters
such as hiring, retaining, managing, terminating, etc. Therefore, considering that I have over
eight years of experience in this area of Human Resource Development, I would like to continue
building on my skills and experiences, both through professional development and lifelong
learning. If I happen to end up running these three restaurants on my own after my father retires
it will be good for me to have the proper qualifications that will help protect my family, my
businesses, and my employees.
After completing these two summer sessions I am going to Washington D.C. to
participate in Texas Tech’s Congressional Internship where I hope to learn as much as I can
about the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and what bills/legislation is currently
being introduced into the House of Representatives that will affect my businesses back home as
well as keep me up to date on my knowledge of equal employment opportunity. I hope that this
opportunity will also aid in expanding my network, help obtain my dream job if I do not decide
to go into our family business, and possibly open doors for awesome job opportunities in
politics—another are of concentration that interests me. Upon my return from Washington D.C.
I will graduate in December 2015 with a degree in University Studies with minors in Human

Resource Development, Organizational Leadership, and English Studies. Resources needed to
accomplish this most definitely requires financial capital and a lot of support from my husband,
family, and friends. My overall goal is to ultimately make a positive difference in the lives of
employees while simultaneously protecting the company.
Short-Term Objectives
My first short-term goal is my participation in the Congressional Internship this fall
semester. There are many things I wish to accomplish during my time in Washington D.C. My
hope for this internship is to expand my network. I believe that networking is one of the most
important skills to utilize when trying to become successful. By having a large network of
support, especially country wide, I will be able to bring so much more to the company I end up
working for. I also want to learn more, firsthand, about the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission and what goals they have set that will impact Human Resource departments all over
the United States and even around the world on a global level. This internship will hopefully
open doors for my future career as well, whether located in Washington D.C. or Austin, Texas.
My second short-term goal is to find a job that relates to my desired career as a Human
Resource manager. I have already begun to search for jobs in my area, but considering that I will
not graduate until December it has been challenging to say the least. My objective is to gain
opportunities for a job out of my internship this fall that will help guide me towards helping
employees and organizations work together to become top competitors in their industry.
My final short-term goal is to nail down a job where I there is room for advancement at
an organization that considers their employees to be their most precious asset. From there I will
be able to protect both the company and their employees from any wrongdoings that could occur
during employment. There are so many different facts and procedures that companies and

employees are not aware of that are in place to protect the company from losing a law suit as
well as protecting the employees from wrongful termination, workplace harassment, etc. I want
to help a company to flourish while also contributing to a healthy workplace environment that
employees will enjoy, especially if I am going to be working there as well.
These short-term goal are most important to me because they are going to pave the direct
path towards my ideal job. These goals are going to be measured by simple accomplishment.
Once I accomplish one I will move on to the next goal and then to the next. If I wake up every
day looking forward to going to work and positively affecting lives of others I will be able to
count myself lucky!
Connection
My three areas of concentration include Human Resource Development, Organizational
Leadership, and English Studies. I personally believe that my three areas of concentration all fit
together nicely. In order to be a successful in Human Resource Development, more specifically
as a manager, it is important that I possess the skills to be a great leader. Organizational
Leadership has given me the knowledge of what types of management styles are appropriate for
certain types of work environments as well as which styles are responded to in the most positive
manner. Organizational Leadership has also provided me with tools that I can utilize to become
a leader in my future career that people will respect, trust, and confide in. I believe that our
world is in need of great leaders and if I am meant to be an effective leader I want to have the
skills and abilities to do so.
My third area of concentration is English Studies which is a very strong area to be
educated in. My mother is an English professor and raised me to love English, reading, and
vocabulary. I personally believe that by having knowledge in different areas such as English

Composition, Linguistic Science, and even in Post-Colonial Short Stories, I will be able to bring
more to the table when I am performing tasks in the work place. It is imperative to have proper
reading and writing skills to be successful with any job and is also considered a commodity when
companies are looking over job resumes. These three areas of concentration will hopefully make
me more desirable in the job market because I will have knowledge on how to collaborate in
groups and how to approach problems, tasks, and duties from different angles.
The best part of being a University Studies student is that I will be able to bring more to
the table than most other job candidates. In order to obtain my long-term goal of being a Human
Resource manager in a reputable organization where I can help both the company and the
employees create the optimal work place, I will have to be able to convince my future employers
that the skills I have coupled with the experience that I have gained while supervising my own
restaurants and participating in the Congressional Internship are unmatched. This Integrated
Studies Program has opened my eyes to new ways of thinking and has formed me into the fierce
candidate required to obtain my future dream job.
