MY INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCES ACQUIRED UPTO 2012
ESCOM LTD (1997-2012)
1 At Nkula Generation Control centre as shift generation control engineer (998-1999)
 Running generation plants, and carried out authorisation tests to be authorised to
execute generators running, shutting down and synchronising into power system plus
controlling system parameters such as system voltage levels, power factors, capacity of
generated system powers and switchyard operations.
 Carried out generation plants maintenance.
 Monitoring water level at intake dam.
 Overhauling of power generating plants during rehabilitation projects at Nkula’A,
Tedzani I&II when they were heavily damaged due to station water flooding.
 Troubleshooting faulty parts, and repairing and replacing faulty parts in control panels,
and cooling plants.
2 In Transmission (1999-2012) as assistant and transmission engineer
 At Balaka Station was responsible for setting up new outstation office and carrying out
routine line patrols, maintenance works on 33kv, 66kv and 132kv wooden and tower
lines plus fabricating and replacing tower members on vandalised towers in 1999-2001.
 Participated in Mapanga-Chigumula-Bt West 132kv tower construction project 1999.
 Advised the then chief engineer-transmission on very economical running of lines-
corridors and pole base clearing projects in 1999 and the idea started being
implemented from that year.
 In 2000-2001 participated in the construction of 30km 66kv tubular tower line from
Mapanga via Chigumula to Blantyre west in 1999-2001.
 At Salima Station was sent to groom the gang to be very committed in carrying out
system overhead lines maintenance, and to improve central transmission network
performance with a good approach to lines maintenance. I was senior-authorised to
issue and cancel Electrical Permit-to-works plus carrying out system operations on
132kv and 66kv overhead lines in 2001-2002.
 In Blantyre managed a Rehabilitation Maintenance works of (1) Nkula’B-Mapanga
66kv overheadline No1 of 56km, (2) Nkula’B-Mapanga 66kv overhead line No2. (3)
Nkula’A-Blantyre 66kv overhead line 10 months in 2003/04. The special assignment
involved planning and outsourcing project resources such as specifying required
materials, optimizing transport, tools requirements as well as supervising daily works
and monitoring work progress and compiling monthly reports.
 Compiled Transmission wooden overhead line profiles database for Escom system in
2004.
 Handled brain-storming issues in advance before worst damages and problems could
have transpired such advising on use of right acid cleaning substances in cleaning
Blantyre 33kv/66kv substations plants in 2004.
 Implemented 2004-05 Transmission overhead lines maintenance project as coordinator
and holding system maintenance database updating and clearing cleared defects on the
lines in the data base. This involved optimising resources and maintenance timeframe.
 Had designed single-handedly several line diversions after lines collapsed covering two
kilometres 2001 and 2004 respectively.
 Had attended internal Performance Management Project courses in 2005.
 Involved in emergency lines diversions on 66kv Nkuala’A-Chingeni, Nkhotakota-
Thunthama and LLA-A48 overhead-lines in 2005, 2001 and 2000.
 In 2005 participated in Power lines software-CADD course (computer aided designing
package for power line) with Trans-Africa Projects in South Africa where the topics
covered these areas: - Line route planning, line profiling, tower/pole selection,
optimising line project design, sagging, pole/tower spanning for optimum project
costing of line conductors, earth wire and materials.
 Carried out line acceptance patrol inspection and accepted 300km 132KV double
circuitry tower line from Lilongwe-Nkula power generation in 2006.
 Had really assisted many engineers in understanding system parameters that are
pressure-tested (High voltage tests in finding insulation voltage levels) or violated to
have voltage flashovers in 2005 when voltage flashovers burned cross-arms in bad
moist weather.
 For three consecutive years coordinated corridor clearing and overhead-lines
maintenance projects from 2004 to 2006
 Advised the correct interfacing of two 132kv distant substations (Lilongwe’B-Salima)
in accordance with three phase configuration in 2005.
 Implemented 2005-06 Transmission overhead lines maintenance project as co-ordinator
as well as implementer, and updating system maintenance database and clearing cleared
defects on the lines in the database. This involved optimising resources and
maintenance timeframe.
 Zone Engineer (transmission overhead lines) and extended Senior Authorisation to issue
and cancel Electrical Permit-to-work on high voltages 11kv, 33kv and 66kv 132kv
overhead-lines plus carrying out switching operations on these voltage networks in
central and southern region in 2007.
 Innovated and designed or modified post insulators pads in 2007.
 Carrying out various challenging duties being among interviewers of senior
authorisation tests, team assessments and controlling budgets in 2007.
 Trouble-shooting systems problems and rectifying problems in 2007.
 Created and innovated and implemented checklist forms for Tower and wooden lines in
2007.
 Training on being safety steward and safety awareness every year.
 Training new technical recruits such as graduates and technicians as well as linesmen.
 Taken part in annual transmission maintenance budgets every year and controlling
expenditures every year up to 2012.
 Have played a role in transmission overhead lines of facilitating, coordinating plus
implementing of master maintenance program (2004-20015).
 From January 2008-2012 carried out maintenance works on all Lilongwe, central region
and northern plus partly southern region transmission overhead-lines concerning
corridor clearing management, changing and replacement of rotten poles, cross-arms,
vandalized stays, structure accessories plus monitoring group performance and
productivity.
 In 2008-2012 managed the fabrication and replacement of vandalized tower members
on Lilongwe’A-Dedza-Mlangeni 66kv overhead-lines on seriously 10vandalized
towers.
 Designed a point-of-work maintenance checklist for tower and wooden overhead-lines
(September-July 2008).
 Participated in annual budget and maintenance works planning plus reviewing targets
achieved every quarterly for 11 years.
 Involved in surveying and routing of new 220kV transmission lines of 320km plus
conducted social and environmental impact assessments with the Malawi government
officials who are to fund the project with the funds from World Bank funds in 2010.
 Conducted public awareness campaign along Lilongwe-Dedza-Mlangeni 66kV
overhead-line 2009 and 2011.
 Carried out linesmen training, grooming technically, team performance monitoring and
management and outsourcing of required team tools and equipment from 1998 to 2012.
 Carried out Lines Corridors Management maintenance from 1999 to 2012.
 In 2007 participated in assessment and evaluation of lines construction bidders for
second 132kv circuit restringing for 320km Nkula’B-Golomoti-Lilongwe’B overhead-
line.
 In 2009 and 2010 I participated in switchgear operations and systems refresher
courses.
 In 2010 I participated in switchgear in SADC power pool meeting in Swaziland.
 In 2011 I participated in switchgear in World Bank procurement procedures course in
Lilongwe in Malawi.

330kv line to be constructed using USA Millennium Challenge Account Funds to be
granted to Malawi.

Zambia.
 In 2013 involved in construction of 1km of 66kv overhead-line diversion to pave way
for new road construction.

This involved optimising resources and maintenance timeframe.  Zone Engineer (transmission overhead lines) and extended Senior Authorisation to issue and cancel Electrical Permit-to-work on high voltages 11kv, 33kv and 66kv 132kv overhead-lines plus carrying out switching operations on these voltage networks in central and southern region in 2007.  Innovated and designed or modified post insulators pads in 2007.  Carrying out various challenging duties being among interviewers of senior authorisation tests, team assessments and controlling budgets in 2007.
  • 4.  Trouble-shooting systems problems and rectifying problems in 2007.  Created and innovated and implemented checklist forms for Tower and wooden lines in 2007.  Training on being safety steward and safety awareness every year.  Training new technical recruits such as graduates and technicians as well as linesmen.  Taken part in annual transmission maintenance budgets every year and controlling expenditures every year up to 2012.  Have played a role in transmission overhead lines of facilitating, coordinating plus implementing of master maintenance program (2004-20015).  From January 2008-2012 carried out maintenance works on all Lilongwe, central region and northern plus partly southern region transmission overhead-lines concerning corridor clearing management, changing and replacement of rotten poles, cross-arms, vandalized stays, structure accessories plus monitoring group performance and productivity.  In 2008-2012 managed the fabrication and replacement of vandalized tower members on Lilongwe’A-Dedza-Mlangeni 66kv overhead-lines on seriously 10vandalized towers.  Designed a point-of-work maintenance checklist for tower and wooden overhead-lines (September-July 2008).  Participated in annual budget and maintenance works planning plus reviewing targets achieved every quarterly for 11 years.  Involved in surveying and routing of new 220kV transmission lines of 320km plus conducted social and environmental impact assessments with the Malawi government officials who are to fund the project with the funds from World Bank funds in 2010.  Conducted public awareness campaign along Lilongwe-Dedza-Mlangeni 66kV overhead-line 2009 and 2011.  Carried out linesmen training, grooming technically, team performance monitoring and management and outsourcing of required team tools and equipment from 1998 to 2012.  Carried out Lines Corridors Management maintenance from 1999 to 2012.  In 2007 participated in assessment and evaluation of lines construction bidders for second 132kv circuit restringing for 320km Nkula’B-Golomoti-Lilongwe’B overhead- line.  In 2009 and 2010 I participated in switchgear operations and systems refresher courses.  In 2010 I participated in switchgear in SADC power pool meeting in Swaziland.  In 2011 I participated in switchgear in World Bank procurement procedures course in Lilongwe in Malawi.  In 2011 I participated in new line route tracing, marking and pegging for 132kV or 330kv line to be constructed using USA Millennium Challenge Account Funds to be granted to Malawi.  From 2009 to 2012 I have participated in Safety and public awareness campaign.  In 2012 May/June I participated in Transmission lines maintenance course at KGRTC in Zambia.  In 2013 involved in construction of 1km of 66kv overhead-line diversion to pave way for new road construction.
  • 5.  In June 2014 I was attached to ZESCO (Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation) for two weeks.  Continuous supervision of transmissions overhead-lines teams from 1999 to 2015.  Involved in and finished the compilation of Transmission maintenance and working procedures and standards in July in 2015.  From 2013 to 2017 appointed Project Implementation Unit member and project transmission engineer for Northern and Central Malawi to see through the Power Infrastructure Development project for 132kv and 66kv project from the inception to the end.  Attended Fire Brigade training for a week at Kapichira power station in 2014.  Attended Live Maintenance of Transmission 132kv overhead-lines in South Africa in April in 2015.  Continuous participation in optical fibre installation project from 2012 to 2015.
