CMST 228:
Argument and Reasoning
An introduction to the field of argumentation, addressing the
basic structure, types and critical analysis of argument. Students
will learn to identify types of reasoning, argument fallacies and
pseudoreasoning, and will apply this knowledge in the
construction of arguments supporting and attacking given
positions. A course designed to improve a student's critical
thinking skills.
Applies to Minnesota Transfer Curriculum
Goals 6 and 9.

- 7. Course Policies
1. All assignments, quizzes, and tests are due when assigned.
Late submissions will be docked 10% for every 24 hours late
(including weekends).
2. You must complete the Affirmative Case assignment to be
eligible to receive a passing grade. If you fail to do so, you
will receive an F for the course.
3. All work is expected to be your own. Students caught
plagiarizing will receive a failing grade for the course.
4. If you disappear from the course and quite participating, I
will submit a Last Date of Attendance for you. This triggers
an F being recorded for your final grade. If this happens, you
can see the registrar to see if you can Withdraw from the
course. For spring semester, I will submit a Last Date of
Attendance after 10 days of no participation; in the
summer, I will submit the LDA after 5 days.

- 8. Course Policies
4. Any technical issues related to your own personal computer
system, internet access, email, or any other personal
hardware/software problems are your own and you are
expected to handle them yourself. If you use Ridgewater
College equipment to participate in the course and you have
technical problems, you should contact the computer lab
assistant and/or Ridgewater College Computer Services.
Although some technical glitches are to be
expected, recurring technical problems will not be considered
an excuse for not completing course requirements.
5. Email is our primary communication channel. You are
expected to access your ridgewater.edu email on a daily
basis, M-F, to read daily course updates.
6. No assignments will be accepted after the course ending date
as indicated in the syllabus.
